Campbell, Troyan win major awards as eight Mountain Hawks named All-Patriot League

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team was well represented as the Patriot League announced its all-league teams and major award winners on Tuesday. Senior Christine Campbell was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Year and was one of eight Mountain Hawks named to the All-Patriot League teams. Head coach Fran Troyan was voted Patriot League Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career after guiding Lehigh to its sixth straight Patriot League regular season title.
The All-Patriot League teams and major awards are voted on by the league's seven head coaches. Troyan was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in the last six seasons after guiding the Mountain Hawks to a 32-17 overall record and a 16-2 league mark. Lehigh started the season 8-14 but has won 24 of its last 27 games since returning from Spring Break.
Campbell becomes Lehigh's 10th Pitcher of the Year in the last 13 seasons and 14th overall. She also earned second team all-league honors to become a three-time All-Patriot League selection. Campbell leads the Patriot League with 18 victories and owns a 2.24 ERA in a team-best 149.2 innings of work. The San Diego native ranks second in the league in innings pitched and strikeouts and was 8-1 with a 2.67 ERA during the Patriot League regular season.
Lehigh had five student-athletes named to the All-Patriot League first team, led by senior Vicky Lattanzio, who became the 37th four-time all-league selection in Patriot League softball history and the 17th Lehigh player to earn such distinction. Lattanzio was honored at first base this year after previously earning first team honors at designated player last year and as an outfielder in 2014. She was the second team DP as a sophomore in 2015. This year, Lattanzio is batting .272 with 21 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with five home runs.
Junior Carolyn Wright earned first team all-league honors at catcher for the second straight season. Wright came on in the second half of the season to lead Lehigh with 40 RBIs. She is hitting .311 overall and hit an impressive .412 with 26 RBIs in 18 Patriot League games this season.
Senior Ashley Cole was recognized at two different positions, earning first team honors at designated player and second team honors as an outfielder. Cole has enjoyed her best season in the brown and white as a senior, hitting .338 overall and leading Lehigh with 52 hits and 35 runs scored, while tying Lattanzio for the team lead with five homers. She also hit a team-best .419 in Patriot League games.
Two sophomores earned first-team honors for their first career all-league accolades. Ashley Quidolit Rabago was named to the first team as an outfielder, while Emily Sorem is one of the first team pitchers.
Rabago hit .319 this season and was second to Cole on the team with 46 hits and 26 runs scored. Sorem was Lehigh's top pitcher during Patriot League play, going 7-0 in league games with a 1.22 ERA. Overall, Sorem is 11-7 with a team-leading three shutouts and 2.15 ERA.
Joining Campbell and Cole on the second team were junior Nicole Yozzo and freshman Mary-Hannah Smith. Yozzo earned second-team all-league laurels for the second time in her career after leading Lehigh with a .339 overall batting average and 22 stolen bases. Smith was recognized at second base after leading Lehigh with 15 extra base hits (10 doubles, two triples and three home runs) and 25 RBIs to go along with a .301 average.
Boston University outfielder Jilee Schanda was voted Patriot League Player of the Year, while Army West Point outfielder Lacey Swafford was the Rookie of the Year. Lafayette had the Defensive Player of the Year in shortstop Brooke Wensel.
Lehigh will host the Patriot League Tournament beginning Thursday at Leadership Park. The top-seeded Mountain Hawks will host No. 4 Holy Cross in the tournament's opening game at noon, with No. 2 Boston University and No. 3 Army West Point to follow at 2:30 p.m.
