BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior catcher Carolyn Wright has been named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for softball, the league announced Wednesday. Wright was one of Lehigh's top on-field performers throughout the regular season, as well as the team's top performer in the classroom. She was one two Mountain Hawks to be named to the Academic All-Patriot League team, where she is joined by senior Ashley Cole.
Both Wright and Cole are accounting majors.
Wright holds an impressive 3.94 cumulative GPA. Last year, the Chula Vista, Calif. native was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team as well as the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. Wright was also named to the NFCA All-Academic Team last fall. A two-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Wright has made Lehigh's Dean's List, with a GPA over 3.6, in each of her first five semesters, including a pair of 4.0 GPA semesters.
On the field, Wright is now a two-time first-team All-Patriot League selection as a catcher. She leads Lehigh with 40 RBIs and led the league in RBIs (26), slugging percentage (.667) and doubles (7) in Patriot League games, while hitting .412 in 18 league games.
Wright becomes the ninth different Lehigh player to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the first since Emily Bausher won the award in 2015. Lehigh student-athletes have won the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for softball 11 times.
Cole joins Wright on the Academic All-League team as she carries a 3.32 GPA. A two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Cole earned first team All-Patriot League honors as a designated player and added second team honors as an outfielder. Cole batted .338 overall and .419 in Patriot League play and leads Lehigh 52 hits and 35 runs scored while tying for the team lead with five home runs.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
Lehigh will host the Patriot League Tournament beginning Thursday at Leadership Park. The top-seeded Mountain Hawks will host No. 4 Holy Cross in the tournament's opening game at noon, with No. 2 Boston University and No. 3 Army West Point to follow at 2:30 p.m.
