
Four Mountain Hawks Honored on Baseball All-Patriot League Team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team landed four individuals on the 2017 All-Patriot League Teams for a total of five selections as the league announced its major award winners and all-league teams on Wednesday. Seniors Jacen Nalesnik and Connor Donovan were selected to the first team, while Donovan also earned a spot on the second team along with fellow senior David Young and freshman Levi Stoudt.
The five All-League selections for Lehigh finished second in the Patriot League. Regular season champion Navy led the way with seven selections, including a league-leading five first team honorees. Army, Bucknell and Holy Cross all received four selections each, while Lafayette received two.
Donovan landed on the first team as a designated hitter and earned a spot on the second team as a starting pitcher. The senior ends his career as a three-time All-League honoree after earning second team honors in 2016 as a designated hitter. He was named a Patriot League Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week this season.
The senior played in and started all 50 games for Lehigh as either a first baseman or designated hitter, while also working as a weekend starter on the mound. He finished third in the Patriot League in home runs (8) and ninth in the league in slugging percentage (.507). He ranked fourth on the team in batting average (.280) among players who played in 40+ games this season and finished second on the team in home runs with eight. Donovan also ended the season second on the team in slugging percentage (.507) and on-base percentage (.384). In the field, he posted a .988 fielding percentage with 219 putouts, 25 assists and three errors on 247 total chances.
On the mound, Donovan posted the lowest earned-run average (2.11) on the team and lowest among Patriot League starting pitchers. He surrendered the fewest total runs (17) and earned runs (11) by a Patriot League starting pitcher. The righty tied for the Lehigh team lead in wins (4) as he allowed the fewest hits (40), fewest total runs (17) and fewest earned runs (11) out of the team's top-three weekend starters.
The senior surrendered just four extra-base hits on the season (1 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR) which is the lowest total of any Lehigh pitcher who logged at least 8.1 innings of work this season. It is also lowest total of extra-base hits allowed among Patriot League pitchers who pitched at least 22.1 innings on the season.
In Patriot League play, Donovan posted a 1.88 ERA in games (5 app, 5 gs, 29.1 ip) to finish third in the league. He also finished third in the league with a .219 opponent batting average in league play. He ranked second in the Patriot league in hits allowed (23), runs allowed (9) and earned runs allowed (6) in league games.
Nalesnik finishes his career as a two-time All-League honoree as an outfielder after earning a spot on the first team for the first time in his career in 2017. The senior outfielder was also a 2017 Preseason All-Patriot League honoree. He also added a Patriot League Player of the week honor to his season resume earlier in the week.
The righty ranked as the top power hitter in the Patriot League this season and one of the most dangerous offensive threats at the plate and on the base paths. On a national level, he finished the season tied for the ninth-most home runs (13), tied for the fifth-most runs (53), tied for the 11th-most total bases (117) and tied for the 17th-most runs per game (1.06) in NCAA Division I.
The senior led the Patriot League in home runs (13) and slugging percentage (.606), while ranking second in runs (53). He ranked as the team leader in slugging pct. (.606), runs (53), hits (62), RBI (39), doubles (14), home runs (13), total bases (117) and stolen bases (9). He also led Lehigh in batting average (.321) among players who played in 40+ games.
In the field, Nalesnik posted a .926 fielding percentage on the season in right field. He ranked fifth on the team with 84 putouts and was one of four Lehigh players to start all 50 games this season.
Stoudt capped off a stellar rookie campaign with the Brown and White earning a Second Team All-Patriot League honor as a starting pitcher. The freshman was also a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, in addition to garnering a Pitcher of the Week honor earlier this season.
The rookie righty led Lehigh in innings pitched (61.2) and starts (12) on the season. He posted the second-lowest ERA (2.34) among Lehigh starting pitchers and third-lowest ERA among all Lehigh pitchers. He tied Donovan for the team lead in wins (4) while finishing second on the team in strikeouts (45).
Stoudt posted the second-lowest ERA among Patriot League pitchers (behind Donovan), in addition to allowing the second-lowest amount of earned runs (16) and total runs (24) among Patriot League starters.
Through 31.1 innings against Patriot League competition, Stoudt compiled a 2.30 ERA while surrendering just eight runs. He compiled 21 strikeouts and surrendered 26 hits as league opponents hits .228 against him.
Young earned the first All-Patriot League selection of his career as he earned a spot on the second team as a first baseman. The senior was on fire through the second half of the season and throughout league play as he was named the Patriot League Player of the Week previously this season.
The senior completed his second-straight season with .300+ batting average as he hit .303 on the season to finish fourth on the team. He ended the season ranked second on the team in runs batted in (34) and total bases (82). His 50 total hits ranked third among Lehigh players, while he also ranked third in doubles (11) and home runs (7).
Young's offensive game heated up once he got into Patriot League play and led Lehigh in most offensive categories against league competition. He finished tied for fifth in league play with a .368 batting average while he led the league in RBI (23) in league play. He ranked third in doubles (7) and home runs (4) to finish third in total bases (44) against Patriot League opponents.
In the field, Young was a key defensive piece for the Mountain Hawks this season and throughout his career. This season, he posted a .985 fielding percentage as he split duties between first and second base. He racked up 209 putouts and 55 assists with just four errors on 265 total chances on the season. For his career, Young owns a .991 fielding percentage.
As a team this season, Lehigh ranked third in the league with a .265 batting average and second with a .430 slugging percentage. The Mountain Hawks led the league by a wide margin with 53 home runs, leading Navy and Lafayette who tied for second with 35 each. On the mound, Lehigh placed second in team ERA (.4.64), but led in league play with a 3.51 team ERA. The Mountain Hawks also allowed the fewest amount of runs (74) and earned runs (62) in league play.
