
Mountain Hawks to kick off 12-game California trip Friday at Stanford Easton Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will travel to northern California for a long stretch of games during spring break, spanning from March 10-18. The team will compete in multiple tournaments along the way, including the Stanford Easton Classic from March 10-12 and the Santa Clara Round Robin from March 17-18.

At 4-6 overall Lehigh is coming off a 1-4 showing in the Homewood Suites by Hilton RDU/RTP Invitational, with its sole win coming against North Carolina State 5-4 in eight innings on March 3.

Freshman infielder Mary-Hannah Smith leads the team in batting average after 10 games, hitting .389 with three doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Smith led Lehigh in its North Carolina trip, batting .545 over five games with three extra-base hits and three RBIs. Senior outfielder Ashley Cole has also stood out, batting .290 with a team-high nine hits to go along with two home runs and five RBIs. Senior Christine Campbell leads the team in pitching, going 3-1 in seven appearances with a 2.28 ERA, striking out 19 and walking 10.

The trip also affords an opportunity for half of the Mountain Hawks roster to play in their home state. The nine California natives on Lehigh's roster include three from the northern part of the state: juniors Nicole Yozzo (Pleasanton) and Rachel Timberman (Shingle Springs) and sophomore Brianna Gerhardt (Petaluma).

The Stanford Easton Classic, which will take place in Stanford, California, will begin against Cal Poly at 7:15 p.m. ET on Friday, March 10. Cal Poly will enter the tournament with a 12-6 record, including wins in its last six games. The Mustangs have allowed just one run in their last five games. Lehigh has never faced Cal Poly in softball.

The Mountain Hawks will then have back-to-back games March 11, beginning at 7:15 p.m. ET against host Stanford. The Cardinal improved to 13-8 following a Wednesday win over UC Davis. Lehigh lost its only previous meeting with Stanford, losing 4-0 in the 2008 NCAA Amherst (Mass.) Regional

The next game that day will be against Grand Canyon at 9:30 p.m. ET. Grand Canyon is 20-2 this year, including wins in 13 of its last 14 games. Lehigh has never played Grand Canyon, which is in its fourth and final season in a transition to Division I. On March 12, Lehigh will take on Stanford again at 2:45 p.m. ET and then will play Connecticut at 7:15 p.m. ET. Connecticut is 5-7 this year and won its only meeting against Lehigh, which took place in 1997.

Lehigh will have a day off before playing three more games from March 14-15, including a matchup against No. 23 California on March 14 in Berkeley. The Mountain Hawks will then play Massachusetts and Pacific back-to-back on March 15 in Stockton, California. Lehigh has never faced California or Pacific and holds an 0-3 record all-time against Massachusetts, with all three previous meetings coming in NCAA Tournament competition at UMass.

Following another day off, Lehigh will close out its trip with four games at the Santa Clara Round Robin, March 17-18. The Mountain Hawks will face Northwestern and Santa Clara on March 17 and Long Beach State and Grand Canyon on March 18.

Lehigh ventured to Southern California in 1998 and did so again in 2014, when Lehigh's current seniors were freshmen.
