Johns, Mountain Hawks lead Lehigh Invitational after 18 holes

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A strong opening round has the Lehigh men's golf team in first place after 18 holes at the Lehigh Invitational Friday at Saucon Valley Country Club. All five Lehigh scoring players shot 76 or better, led by senior Billy Johns, who leads the 66 player field after a round of one under par 71. As a team the Mountain Hawks shot 295 to lead Bucknell and Hofstra by eight strokes.
 
Johns carded three birdies and two bogeys, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 to take a two shot lead into the final round. Five players, including junior Johnny Hsu are tied for second at one over par 73. Hsu finished with four birdies including 15 and 17 to finish strong.
 
Sophomore Owen Quinn is the third Mountain Hawk in the top 10 as he is tied for 10th after a 75. Quinn's opening round included three birdies.
 
Junior Lee Hammerschmidt and sophomore Ryan Kelly are tied for 16th place after shooting 76. Hammerschmidt was relatively steady, while Kelly rebounded from a tough front nine to shoot three birdies on his way to a 33 on the back side.
 
Lehigh also has four players competing as individuals. Freshman walk-on Zack Warren made four birdies on his way to a 76 and is tied for 16th place. Sophomore Joe Ender shot 77 and is tied for 27th place. One stroke behind Ender is sophomore Chris Pollan, who is tied for 34th with a 78. Junior Max Redetzke shot 83 and is tied for 62nd place.
 
The Lehigh Invitational wraps up Saturday with the final 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. from Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks' scoring team will tee off with Bucknell and Hofstra beginning at 11:20 a.m.
