Lehigh Plays to 1-1 Draw with Penn

9/20/2016 11:00:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Ivy League foe Penn on Tuesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Junior Jack Miskel notched his first goal of the season in the 85th minute for Lehigh's lone tally. Freshman Will Smith made his collegiate debut in net for the Mountain Hawks, making four saves on five shots. Lehigh held a 16-15 advantage in the shots department, with each team tallying five shots on goal. With the draw, Lehigh now sits at 2-4-1 on the season, while the Quakers hold a record of 1-1-4 following their fifth double overtime game in six matches this season.

"I thought we did a good job of creating chances and I thought the first 15 minutes, we came out flying and I really liked the attitude of the team getting off to a fast start," head coach Dean Koski said. "We had some good looks, but we didn't finish."
The Mountain Hawks nearly opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a scoring chance from junior Kevin Klinkenberg. Taking a pass in the top of the box, Klinkenberg dribbled in and slid the ball across the goalmouth and by the lunging keeper towards the bottom left corner, but the ball hit off the post and was cleared out.

Both team threatened in the final seconds before halftime when Lehigh's Tommy Dokho put a header on goal off a centering pass that was grabbed by the keeper. Penn quickly answered down at the other end of the field with a shot by Brandon Bartel that sailed just wide of the far left post.

Lehigh held a 6-4 shots advantage at the half and registered the only two shots on goal of the opening frame, while Penn held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Klinkenberg provided the first scoring chance of the second half for Lehigh in the 52nd minute. Mark Forrest sent a ball ahead down the left side to Doyle Tuvesson, who then centered the ball across the box to Klinkenberg, who slid to get off a shot that just missed wide of the right post.

Lehigh grabbed another significant chance in the 76th minute when Tuvesson sent a pass ahead into the left side of the box to Forrest, who tried to pick the bottom right corner, but sent it just wide.

The Mountain Hawks finally broke through in the 85th minute when Miskel took a touch pass from Forrest, who split multiple defenders into the box and drilled a low shot under the keeper into the middle of the night to put Lehigh on top 1-0. Forrest was credited with his team-leading third assist and 11th point of the season.

However, the lead was short lived, with the Quakers quickly answering just one minute later. Dami Omitaomu sent a pass from the far right side into the box, where Austin Kuhn used a one-timer to bury it low past Smith to knot the game 1-1.

"We did a really good job to find a goal late in the game then a really poor job of responding to that goal," Koski said. "For us to give up a goal within two minutes to tie the game was really disappointing and frustrating. It was poor decisions. When you make poor decisions against a good team, they're going to punish you."

A leaping fingertip save by Smith just over a minute later kept the game tied and forced overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Lehigh grabbed its best chance of extra time in the 106th minute when Miskel sent one high over the bar after a give-and-go with Klinkenberg.

The game's final scoring chance came seconds later, when what appeared to be the golden goal for Penn was wiped out due to an offside call.

"The performance overall was good tonight," Koski said. "We did a good job defending, we created opportunities, we worked hard and we played as a team. That's what we'll build off of rather than the result."

The Brown and White will return to the pitch on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. with the Patriot League opener at Holy Cross.
