BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a career game against Bucknell Friday, Lehigh women's lacrosse junior Julianne D'Orazio has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, as announced on Monday. D'Orazio notched career-highs in groundballs (8) and caused turnovers (7), along with two draw controls, in a big 12-11 Lehigh victory. The seven caused turnovers set a school record while tying the Patriot League mark.
D'Orazio's seven caused turnovers are tied for the fourth most by any player in the nation this season while the eight groundballs are the most by a Lehigh player since the 2010 season. The Bryn Mawr, Pa. native anchored a defense that allowed just two-first half goals against the Bison Friday, tied for the fewest goals the Bison have scored in a half this season. The Mountain Hawks didn't surrender a goal for the game's first 13:43 then followed with another scoreless stretch of 13:12 bridging the end of the first half and beginning of the second.
On the year, D'Orazio has accumulated 10 goals, two assists, 40 groundballs, 33 caused turnovers and 27 draw controls. D'Orazio ranks second in the Patriot League in both groundballs per game (2.67) and caused turnovers per game (2.20). Her 33 caused turnovers on the season place her just outside the top 10 in Patriot League history and five shy of tying the Lehigh school record.
In addition to D'Orazio's award, classmates Allison LaBeau and Lauren Beausoleil both garnered honorable mention recognition this week. LaBeau's five points on four goals and one assist marked her 11th game this season with four or more points. She reached 40 goals, 30 assists and 70 points on the season, currently owning 41 goals and 30 assists for 71 points. Beausoleil tallied a game and career-high five goals, adding a season-high four draw controls, to help Lehigh pick up a victory which clinched a home game in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action Tuesday when they host Colgate in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start from the Ulrich Sports Complex. Live video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
