Full team effort leads Lehigh to 10-4 win over Coppin State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team broke a 3-3 tie with seven unanswered runs to secure a 10-4 win over visiting Coppin State Wednesday afternoon at Legacy Park. Eight Mountain Hawk pitchers saw action in the midweek contest while the Lehigh bats knocked nine extra-base hits. Lehigh improves to 11-18 overall with the win, while the Eagles fall to 5-21.
"Yesterday was one of the toughest and flukiest losses I've seen in my 20 years, and our guys did a great job of putting it behind them," said head coach Sean Leary. "Our guys have been seeing the ball well and hitting well at home and continued to do that today. It was a full staff effort today so it was nice to see a lot of guys get action."
Junior Patrick Donnelly hit a grand slam to give Lehigh a six-run cushion in the sixth inning and finished the game with five RBI. Sophomore Ryan Bonshak went 3-for-4 at the plate with a single, double and triple. Freshman Ryan Malloy hit two doubles, while junior John Scarr knocked in two runs. Junior Jacen Nalesnik reached base in four out of his five trips to the plate. Senior Kevin Long picked up the win on the mound after throwing 1.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts.
Coppin State used a two-out solo home run from Jamar Criss to get on the board in the top of the first. Lehigh was able to tie the game in the bottom half of the opening frame as Nalesnik and senior Mackey Price drew walks before executing a double steal. Donnelly followed with an RBI groundout to put the score at 1-1 through one.
Freshman Anthony Morrone and senior Brandon Kulp kept the Eagles off the board in the second and third innings before a two-out, two-run double from Scarr scored Price and Donnelly in the bottom of the third to give Lehigh a 3-1 lead. The Eagles answered with two runs in the top of the fourth thanks to two hits and a walk to tie the game at 3-3.
Bonshak led off the following inning with a single to center field before a sacrifice bunt from junior Stephen Fitzgerald moved him to second. Nalesnik drew a walk before he and Bonshak executed a double steal and Price sent a sacrifice fly to right to give Lehigh a 4-3 lead in the bottom of fifth.
A scoreless top of the fifth was hurled by Long before Lehigh was able to add on another run in the bottom of the frame. A two-out single from Scarr was followed by an RBI double from Malloy to put Lehigh's lead at 5-3. Bonshak opened the bottom of the sixth with his third hit of the day, this one a double to right field. A walk and a hit by pitch then later loaded the bases with two outs before Donnelly worked a 3-2 count and sent a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 9-3. Doubles from Malloy and Nalesnik added another Lehigh run in the top of the seventh to run the score to 10-3.
Sophomore John Fitz kept Coppin State off the board in the sixth and seventh innings and freshman Ryan DeWalt did the same in the eighth. The Eagles were able to get one unearned run off sophomore Buck Schwab in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Mountain Hawks captured the 10-4 win.
Lehigh remains home this weekend to host Holy Cross in a four-game Patriot League series at Legacy Park. Doubleheaders are set to begin at 12 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday and free video of all four games will be available on the Patriot League Network.
