LEWISBURG, Pa. – Powered by a pair of strong pitching performances, the Lehigh softball team swept a series-opening doubleheader at Bucknell Saturday at Becker Field. Freshman Emily Sorem tossed a two-hit shutout as Lehigh's offense erupted for 10 runs in its final three at-bats to take the opener 10-0 in six innings. The Mountain Hawks took the nightcap 2-1 behind a strong outing from junior Christine Campbell.
With two victories, Lehigh improves to 33-12 overall and 11-2 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks lead second place Army West Point by two games in the loss column. Bucknell falls to 26-21 overall and 10-7 in league play.
Game one saw Sorem and Bucknell's Dana Nielsen match zeroes through the first three innings. After a leadoff walk to junior Vicky Lattanzio in the fourth, Lehigh used a two-out rally to plate four runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Rachel Timberman singled home pinch runner Nicole Yozzo to put Lehigh on the board. Timberman took second on the throw home and scored on double to left center by sophomore Carolyn Wright. After a single by freshman Ashley Quidolit, senior Alexis Watanabe tripled to center, plating two more runs to cap the four-run frame.
Lattanzio got Lehigh started in the fifth with a one-out double. A single from senior Jessica Calvini put runners on the corners and two batters later Timberman drilled a three-run home run to left, her first career home run, to extend the Mountain Hawks' lead to 7-0.
Lehigh loaded the bases in the sixth and pushed an eighth run across when Lattanzio was hit by a pitch. Two more runs scored when Calvini reached on an error and Sorem closed out the game with a perfect sixth inning.
Sorem tossed her fourth shutout of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking one as she improves to 14-5 on the season. The only hits for the Bison were a second-inning single by Mariah Midyette and a fifth-inning single by Chaylen Andolino. Andolino was erased on a line drive double play that ended the inning.
The Mountain Hawks finished game one with 10 hits, with Timberman, Watanabe and senior MacKenzie Velasquez recording two apiece.
Lehigh struck early in game two as Velasquez reached on an infield single in the first and then scored on double to right by Lattanzio. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases in the third and with two outs, junior Ashley Cole singled to center scoring freshman Brianna Gerhardt to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead.
Campbell worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third and got out of trouble in both the fourth and fifth innings thanks to two line drive double plays.
Bucknell scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Midyette but with two runners aboard, Campbell got Andolino to ground out to Watanabe to end the inning.
The Mountain Hawks stranded two base runners in the top of the seventh but Campbell closed out Lehigh's second win of the day with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning.
Campbell improved to 18-7 on the season, allowing a run on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Amanda Fazio allowed two runs on eight hits in taking the loss for the Bison.
Velasquez capped a four-hit day with two more hits in the nightcap. Cole also had two hits for the Mountain Hawks in game two.
Lehigh and Bucknell will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday at Becker Field with first pitch set for noon.
