OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Lehigh baseball team got out to 15-0 lead through four and a half innings Wednesday at NYIT and never looked back as the Mountain Hawks picked up a dominant 16-5 victory to secure their fifth-straight win. Lehigh improves to 19-26 overall with the victory, while NYIT falls to 17-21 on the season.

"It was great to see some guys like John Scarr, Jeff Shanfeldt and James Bleming have big offensive days," said head coach Sean Leary. "Ethan Frohman and Mike Gibbons threw the ball really well in the early innings. I thought we played good team baseball today."

Freshman Jeff Shanfeldt knocked in a team-best five runs, while junior John Scarr and sophomores James Bleming and Ryan Bonshak recorded two RBI apiece. Bleming went 3-for-4 at the plate and Bonshak scored a squad-high three runs. Freshman starter Ethan Frohman earned the victory on the mound after throwing three one-hit innings and striking out three batters.

The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a fast start with eight runs in their first trip to the plate. Junior Jacen Nalesnik led off the game with a single up the middle before Bleming followed with a single to center. After senior Mike Garzillo reached on a catcher's interference to load the bases, junior Patrick Donnelly was hit by a pitch before classmate David Young knocked a sacrifice fly to center to put the first two runs on the board. Scarr and Bonshak followed with RBI singles before senior Mackey Price, Shanfeldt and Nalesnik all drew walks. A two-run single from Bleming followed before the Bears pitching staff got the final two outs of the frame as Lehigh took an 8-0 lead through the first half inning. Lehigh then used a pair of hit by pitches, two walks and a wild pitch to add two more runs in the top of the second and extend the Mountain Hawk advantage to 10-0.

The Mountain Hawks were able to add on five more runs in the top of the fifth inning as Bleming opened the frame with a single before taking second on a wild pitch and scoring on a Garzillo RBI. After a fielder's choice and pair of walks, Bonshak drew a bases-loaded walk before a three-run hit from Shanfeldt put the score at 15-0 in favor of the Mountain Hawks.

Freshman Mike Gibbons hurled a pair of hitless frames before NYIT was able to put up two runs on two hits and a Lehigh error in the bottom of the sixth. The Bears added two more runs in the following frame to pull within 15-4. An RBI double from Scarr put another run up for Lehigh in the top of the eighth before freshman Anthony Morrone limited the Bears to just one run in the final 2.1 innings to secure the 16-5 victory.

Lehigh will play its final regular-season league series this weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to Army looking to lock up Lehigh's third-straight trip to the Patriot League Tournament. Doubleheaders will be played both Saturday and Sunday with first pitches set for 1 p.m.
