BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball senior Mike Garzillo hit a walk-off home run to secure a 4-3 win over archrival Lafayette in the series opener before the Mountain Hawk bats came to life in a 10-4 game two victory as Lehigh earned a doubleheader sweep of the rival Leopards Saturday afternoon at Legacy Park. The Mountain Hawks improve to 16-26 overall and 5-9 in Patriot League play with the wins, while Lafayette falls to 13-24 overall and 6-8 in league action.
"The seniors absolutely stepped forward today," said head coach Sean Leary. "Kevin Long and Kevin Boswick set the tone in game one and then Mike Garzillo came up with the big hit. In game two, Mackey Price and Anthony Rinaldi stepped up and every senior that was called upon did their job today."
Senior Kevin Boswick earned the win in game one after throwing the final 2.0 innings, while sophomore Peter Moore threw 7.1 strong frames to earn the victory in the nightcap. Game one starter senior Kevin Long struck out seven Leopards in five innings in his quality start. Eight different Mountain Hawks knocked in runs in the two games combined. Senior Mackey Price went 4-for-4 in the nightcap victory. Junior Patrick Donnelly knocked in three runs in the two games combined, as did sophomore James Bleming thanks to a three-run home run. Junior Connor Donovan and freshman Jeff Shanfeldt both added two RBI apiece.
"Our pitchers attacked the zone today and used our defense," said Leary. "We haven't done that consistently enough in the first 12 Patriot League games, and today we did an outstanding job competing in the zone and forcing them to hit the ball."
Lehigh jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning of the series opener, a seven-inning contest, as junior Jacen Nalesnik drew a leadoff walk before a sacrifice bunt from sophomore James Bleming moved him to second and Garzillo also drew a base on balls. Donnelly then took the first pitch of his at bat and drove it off the left center fence to knock in both runners and give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage through one.
Long kept the Leopards off the board for the first two innings until Lafayette opened the top of the third with a double and single to put runners on the corners with no outs. The Leopards were then able to score a run when Dan Leckie grounded into a double play, but Long was able to limit the damage and keep Lehigh ahead 2-1 through three. Both teams were kept scoreless in the fourth and fifth frames before a hit by pitch and walk put the first two Leopards on base in the top of the sixth and Boswick took the mound in relief of Long. Lafayette then used a sacrifice bunt, RBI groundout and RBI base hit to take a 3-2 lead.
Donovan was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the sixth before junior John Scarr sent a base hit to right and pinch runner Ryan Bonshak moved to third. A batter later, senior Anthony Rinaldi came up with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Bonshak and tie the game at 3-3.
Boswick got two strikeouts and a weak grounder back to the mound in the top of the seventh to retire the heart of the Leopard lineup in order. Garzillo then took the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh and sent it over the left field fence to lead Lehigh to the 4-3 game-one win.
Long finished with a line of three earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in five full innings of work. Boswick earned his second win of the season, while Bednar was saddled with the loss.
The Mountain Hawks picked up where they left off in the day's second game, a full nine-inning affair, as Nalesnik roped a leadoff double to left before moving to third on a Garzillo groundout. Donnelly then sent a two-out single through the left side to give the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead through one.
Moore made quick work of the Leopards in the first two frames. A one-out infield fly from Spencer Rouse fell in between a huddle of Mountain Hawks in the top of the third as Rouse was credited with a double. Michael Coniglio then sent an RBI single to left to tie the game at 1-1, but Moore got the Leopards to ground into an inning-ending double play to limit the damage.
The Mountain Hawks quickly loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third thanks to an infield single from Garillo, Lafayette error on a Donnelly grounder and junior David Young being hit by a pitch. Donovan then smacked a two-run single to left field before Price and Shanfeldt followed with RBI base hits and Lehigh took a 5-1 lead through three.
The Leopards got two runs back in the top of the fourth as Alex Woinski sent a two-run home run to left and Lafayette pulled within 5-3. Young followed suit in the bottom of the frame as he sent a two-out solo shot over the left field fence to put the Mountain Hawks in front 6-3 through four. After a shutdown 1-2-3 inning from Moore in the top of the fifth, Lehigh was able to plate four runs in the bottom of the inning as Price bunted for a single before Shanfeldt knocked an RBI double off the wall. A pitching change and batter later, Bleming drilled a three-run home run to help Lehigh break open a 10-3 advantage.
Moore threw perfect sixth and seventh frames before being relieved by Donovan with one out and a runner on second. The Leopards used an RBI single up the middle to get a run back, but Donovan took care of the rest to secure the 10-4 Lehigh victory and doubleheader sweep.
Moore finished with a line of four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 7.1 frames. Lafayette's Mitch Leeds suffered the loss.
The four-game series between Lehigh and Lafayette concludes Sunday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Legacy Park. Lehigh's six seniors will be honored prior to the games on Senior Day. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
