BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Christine Campbell tossed a complete game, one hit shutout, and sophomore Rachel Timberman had an RBI single to lift Lehigh to a 1-0 win over Princeton in game one of a doubleheader at Leadership Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks completed the sweep with a 7-4 victory in game two, spurred by five runs and three hits in the fifth inning.
With the sweep, Lehigh improves to 29-10 on the season. Princeton, coached by former Lehigh standout Lisa (Sweeney) Van Ackeren, falls to 14-24.
After trading zeroes through the first three innings of game one, Princeton's Kayla Bose delivered a one out single to right field in the top of the fourth, but Campbell was able to induce a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Lehigh then broke through for the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Jessica Calvini led off with a double to left center field, and was sacrificed to third by junior Ashley Cole. Timberman then stepped to the plate and delivered a single to left field to score Calvini and give the Mountain Hawks the 1-0 advantage.
Lehigh threatened once more in the fifth inning, following a one out double from senior Morgan Decker, but Shanna Christian recovered to get back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Princeton got the tying run in scoring position in the sixth inning courtesy of a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt. With the top of the order up, Campbell dug in and got a strikeout of the leadoff hitter, Mikayla Blaska, followed by a groundout to shortstop to end the threat and preserve the one run lead.
Lehigh tallied five hits in the opener, with senior Alexis Wantanabe and Decker each going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Senior MacKenzie Velasquez went 1-for-3, while Timberman was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Calvini had a hit and a run scored. Decker's double was her 16th of the season, setting a new career high.
In the circle, Campbell faced two batters over the minimum to fire her third complete game one hitter of the season, allowing one walk and one hit batsman, while striking out four.
Princeton wasted no time in the nightcap, jumping on the board in the top of the first inning. Kylee Pierce smacked a one out triple down the right field line, scoring one batter later on a double by Keeley Walsh for the early 1-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks were held hitless through the first four innings of game two, before breaking loose for five runs and all three of their hits in the home half of the fifth inning.
Pinch hitting, Timberman led off the inning with a base hit through the right side. Wantanabe then laid down a sac bunt, and a throwing error on the play by the pitcher allowed runners to advance to second and third.
Following a pitching change, Velasquez grounded one to first, but the throw home was too late to get Timberman, tying the game at 1-1. After a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run, Lattanzio drove a double off the top of the left centerfield fence that scored Velasquez. Up next, sophomore Carolyn Wright lined a double over the third base bag and down the line to score Lattanzio, opening up a 4-1 Lehigh lead.
Lehigh kept the pressure on, as sophomore Katie Schultz then dropped down a bunt on a squeeze play. Calvini raced home from third, sliding around the catcher's tag to put Lehigh up 5-1.
The Tigers got a run back in the top of the sixth, but Lehigh answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning when Wantanabe, sophomore Cassie Lajeunesse and Decker drew consecutive walks. A fielding error, followed by a wild pitch scored Wantanabe and Lajeunesse to give Lehigh a 7-2 lead.
Princeton added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh off two hits and on error, but Lehigh's Emily Sorem induced a ground ball fielder's choice to end the game. Sorem went the distance in game two, improving her record to 12-5 on the season, allowing two earned runs on nine hits while striking out two and surrendering just one walk.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action at Leadership Park this Saturday at 1 p.m. with a non-league doubleheader against UMBC. Live stats will be available for both games.
