BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a historic week which included a combined 17 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers, Lehigh men's lacrosse freshman Craig Chick has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced on Monday. Chick becomes the second Mountain Hawk to earn Rookie of the Week this season, and third to win a weekly award. Chick has propelled to first nationally in caused turnovers with 36, nine more than anyone else in the country.
Â
Chick began the week with career highs in groundballs (10) and caused turnovers (8) at Princeton Tuesday. The eight caused turnovers were most by a Lehigh player since Evan Guerrero had nine against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 14, 2009, Chick tied for the most caused turnovers in the nation this season (Division I) and tied Princeton's Sherrerd Field record, originally set by Villanova's Brian Karalunas. Lehigh caused all 13 of Princeton's turnovers.
Â
The Edgewater, Maryland native went on to post seven groundballs and seven caused turnovers against Cornell Saturday. He was part of a Lehigh defense which caused 20 Cornell turnovers, the Mountain Hawks' most caused turnovers since they had 26 on Feb. 14, 2009 vs. Saint Joe's. Despite the Lehigh defense being on the field for the majority of the game, it played very well as the Big Red turned the ball over 23 times on the afternoon. After Cornell took a quick 3-0 lead just 3:20 into the game, Lehigh allowed just two goals over the next 22:45, which allowed the Mountain Hawk offense to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 7-5 lead.
Â
For the season, Chick owns 53 groundballs and a nation-leading 36 caused turnovers, nine ahead of Harvard's Robert Duvnjak in second place with 27. Lehigh senior Tripp Telesco is third nationally with 26. As a team, the Mountain Hawks lead the nation with 131 caused turnovers.
Â
Lehigh now heads to Bucknell on Friday for the regular season finale. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. With a win, the Mountain Hawks would clinch the No. 4 seed and host a Patriot League Quarterfinal game next Tuesday, Apr. 26.
