Lehigh takes final game at Army West Point 6-4 to win series

4/17/2016 4:03:00 PM | Softball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Morgan Decker reached base four times and drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out, sixth-inning single as the Lehigh softball team claimed the rubber game of a three-game series at Army West Point with a 6-4 win Sunday at the Army Softball Complex.

The Mountain Hawks scored two first inning runs, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Christine Campbell came on in relief in the first inning and allowed just one run in seven innings of work to earn the victory. Lehigh improves to 27-10 overall and 8-1 at the halfway point of league play, while Army falls to 25-16 overall and 7-4 in the league.

Decker started a two-out rally in the first inning with a single to left field. Singled by junior Vicky Lattanzio and senior Jessica Calvini loaded the bases for junior Ashley Cole, who singled to left center, scoring two runs to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The first four Army West Point batters reached base against freshman Emily Sorem in the bottom of the first, with Emily Gray tying the game with a two-run single to right field. Campbell came on for Sorem and after a sacrifice bunt, Gladys Esparza-Gallegos' RBI single gave the Black Knights a 3-2 lead after one.

Lehigh used another two-out rally to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the second. Senior Alexis Watanabe doubled down the left field line and then came around to score from second on senior MacKenzie Velasquez's infield single.

Campbell and Army's Renee Poirier then matched zeroes through the end of four innings.

Kristen West relieved Poirier in the top of the sixth and Lehigh threatened but was turned aside when sophomore Carolyn Wright fouled out with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Rachel Timberman led off the sixth inning with a single to left. After a sacrifice bunt and a ground out moved Timberman to third, Decker's third hit of the game, a single to right center, brought Timberman home to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-3 lead.

In the seventh Lehigh added to its lead as Wright came up with runners on the corners and one out and dropped down a squeeze bunt for a base hit, scoring Calvini to put Lehigh up 5-3. Timberman followed with a RBI double to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-3 lead after six and a half innings.

Army pulled a run back in the bottom of the seventh on Alee Rashenskas' RBI double but Campbell got Gray to ground out to Decker to end the game.

Campbell improved to 16-5 on the season, allowing a run on six hits in seven innings of work with no walks and one strikeout. West took the loss for Army, allowing three runs in three innings. Cole, Timberman and Calvini each finished with two hits for Lehigh, which out-hit Army 13-9.

The Mountain Hawks return home to host Princeton in a Wednesday doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for 3 p.m. from Leadership Park. Both games will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
