Mountain Hawks and Army West Point split Saturday twinbill

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior MacKenzie Velasquez went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in as the Lehigh softball team raced to an 8-0 lead before claiming an 8-3 win over Army West Point in the first game of a three game series Saturday at the Army Softball Complex. The Black Knights handed the Mountain Hawks their first league loss in the nightcap, claiming a 1-0 pitcher's duel.
With Saturday's split, Lehigh moves to 26-10 overall and 7-1 in the Patriot League. Army West Point is now 25-15 overall and 7-3 in the league.
Both teams recorded 11 hits in game one but Lehigh built a 7-0 lead scoring seven runs in the second through the fourth innings.
Senior Jessica Calvini led off the top of the second with a double to right center. Velasquez then singled up the middle, scoring Calvini to put Lehigh in front. After a walk and a sacrifice, sophomore Rachel Timberman hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Velasquez to put the Mountain Hawks up 2-0.
Lehigh added to its lead with two runs in the third. Two walks gave the Mountain Hawks runners on first and third with one out. Calvini singled up the middle to score senior Alexis Watanabe, and Velasquez followed with an infield hit to extend Lehigh's lead to four.
The Mountain Hawks added to their lead with three two-out runs in the fourth. Junior Vicky Lattanzio singled home Timberman to put Lehigh up 5-0. After Calvini was hit by a pitch to load the bases, consecutive RBI singles from Velasquez and sophomore Katie Schultz extended Lehigh's lead to 7-0.
Velasquez picked up her fourth hit of the game with a leadoff double in the sixth and scored Lehigh's eighth run on a single to right by Schultz.
Army refused to go quietly, scoring twice in the sixth to avoid the mercy rule and adding a third run in the seventh.
Junior Christine Campbell went the distance for Lehigh, allowing two earned runs on 11 hits to improve to 15-5 on the season. Campbell struck out five and walked three and worked out of jams in the first and fifth innings to keep the Black Knights off the scoreboard.
Caroline Smith started in game one for Army West Point and took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings with four walks.
Lehigh out-hit Army 6-4 in the nightcap but left seven runners on base as Kristen West and Renee Poirier combined on the shutout. The only run of the game came in the third inning as Kasey McCravey singled to third base and scored on a double Alee Rashenskas. Velasquez threw Rashenskas out at the plate after Emily Gray's single to keep it a one run game.
The Mountain Hawks had the first two batters of the game reach base but were unable to score. Lehigh got the tying run to third base in the sixth but West got Velasquez to fly out to center to end the threat. Junior Ashley Cole delivered a pinch hit single in the seventh, but Poirier got freshman Ashley Quidolit to line out to end the game.
West allowed five hits in six innings, while Poirier followed with a scoreless seventh.
Freshman Emily Sorem took the tough luck loss for Lehigh, allowing just the single run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts as she falls to 11-5.
The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will close out their three game series with a single game Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. from the Army Softball Complex. The game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
