Mountain Hawks surge past Army West Point on Senior Day, 14-6

4/10/2016 3:10:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Finding itself in a close contest in the second half, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team ended the game on a 6-0 run to erase any doubt, defeating Army West Point 14-6 on Senior Day Sunday. An all-around team effort saw junior Allison LaBeau post seven points to lead the offense. Classmate Lauren Beausoleil tallied a career-high five groundballs and six caused turnovers while scoring three goals for her second hat trick of the season and fourth of her career. With the win, Lehigh improves to 4-1 in Patriot League play and 10-2 overall.
Prior to the game, Lehigh's five seniors were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the program.

"I'm excited to get a win against an Army team who fought hard," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I'm happy for our seniors to get the win."

Beausoleil's six caused turnovers were most for any Lehigh player since Lauren Dykstra recorded six at Drexel on Mar. 30, 2009. Beausoleil added a draw control as well. LaBeau finished with three goals and four assists, her third game this season with at least seven points.

"Alli is a really dangerous player for us," said Redfern. "The ball goes through her stick a bunch. She just has great vision and makes her teammates better, and also scores her own goals when she needs to deliver for her team."

Sophomore Haley Wentzel recorded a career-high six points behind two goals and a career-high four assists. Freshmen Courtney Henig and Annie Pearson scored twice as well. The Mountain Hawks caused 17 of Army West Point's 22 turnovers, led by Beausoleil's six, four from junior Julianne D'Orazio and two each from sophomore Kierstyn Voiro and Henig.

Lehigh began the game on a four-goal run as Beausoleil scored off a feed from LaBeau at the 24:45 and 22:32 marks to give her team a 2-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, the Mountain Hawks doubled their lead following a goal from senior Kendall Garden.

The Black Knights responded with four of the next five goals to pull within 5-4, but LaBeau scored a big goal from a tough angle to give Lehigh a 6-4 lead at the half.

The teams traded goals to start the second half as Army continued to hang around. Leading 8-6 with less than 20 minutes remaining, D'Orazio scored with 19:38 remaining off a great feed from LaBeau. That sparked a 6-0 run to end the game. Lehigh's offense came alive while its defense didn't allow a goal for the final 19:56 as the Mountain Hawks wrapped up their third straight victory.

"Our defense knows that they're a strong defensive unit, so even when they do give up a couple goals, they get back on track," said Redfern.

Final shots were 32-18 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 21-16 edge in groundballs and 12-10 advantage in draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt made four saves across the Black Knights' Kayla Rowley, who stopped 10.

The Mountain Hawks now travel to Baltimore to face the Loyola Greyhounds on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 3 p.m. Lehigh returns home on Wednesday, Apr. 20 to host archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m.
