Strong pitching and timely hitting help Lehigh complete sweep of Colgate

4/10/2016 4:36:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of strong pitching performance and some clutch hitting powered the Lehigh softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Colgate in the final two games of their three game series, Sunday at Leadership Park. Freshman Emily Sorem tossed a two-hit shutout as Lehigh took the opener 8-0 in five innings, while junior Christine Campbell allowed just one unearned run on one hit as Lehigh rallied to take the nightcap 3-1.

Senior MacKenzie Velasquez and freshman Ashley Quidolit both had three hits and two runs scored in Sunday's doubleheader to lead the offense.

With the sweep, Lehigh improves to 24-8 overall and 6-0 in the Patriot League, while Colgate falls to 4-19 and 1-4 in league play. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Raiders 23-1 in the three-game series sweep.

"Emily came out today and pitched a very strong game with seven strikeouts in five innings," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "She should be able to have six or seven strikeouts in a game like that. Christine came in and I was really happy for her with a one-hitter but more importantly no hit batters and no walks. She fielded her position and that was a complete game of pitching from her. We view our pitcher as an extra infielder and she did a great job fielding as well."

After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning of game one, Lehigh scored a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Quidolit singled to center with one out and then stole second before Velasquez doubled down the right field line to bring her home.

Lehigh used a two-out rally to extend its lead in the third on three consecutive singles from senior Jessica Calvini, sophomore Carolyn Wright and sophomore Lindsay Phillips, with Phillips' hit scoring Calvini to extend Lehigh's lead to 2-0. Quidolit then laced a triple to center scoring two more runs to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 advantage after three innings.

The Mountain Hawks were able to end the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lehigh loaded the bases with one out and went up 5-0 when Velasquez drew a bases loaded walk. Junior Ashley Cole followed with a pinch-hit game-ending three-run double to left as Lehigh claimed game one via the eight run rule.

"I'm so happy for Ashley Cole who came up with the bases loaded double to put that game to the eight run mark," Troyan said. "The neat thing about our outfield right now is that we have five kids out there that would be starters at any school in the Patriot League. We're going to have to mix and match them but we're very happy that all of them are playing so well right now."

Sorem threw her third complete game shutout of the season, allowing just two hits and a walk, while striking out seven as she improves to 10-4 on the season.

Brigit Ieuter took the loss for Colgate, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings. Quidolit led Lehigh's attack, going 3-for-3 in the opener.

The Raiders took an early lead in game two as Katie Bushee reached on catcher's interference to start the first inning. Bushee took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out before scoring on Lauren La Terra's sacrifice squeeze bunt as Colgate plated an early unearned run without the aid of a hit.

Lehigh took the lead in game two thanks to a three-run, two-out rally. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases and Raider pitcher Kyle Griswold walked junior Vicky Lattanzio to force in the tying run. Calvini followed with a single to left, scoring two runs to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead.

Campbell took care of the rest, retiring the final 16 batters she faced to earn her 14th win of the season. Aside from Bushee reaching on the catcher's interference, Colgate's only other baserunner was Gillian Murray, who singled with one out in the second, but was erased when Campbell started her run of 16 straight set down by initializing a 1-6-3 double play to end the frame. Campbell struck out five and did not walk a batter as she allowed just two hits in 12 innings versus the Raiders.

Velasquez had two of Lehigh's four hits against Griswold, who suffered the loss.

"Mac has always been a great, strong player for us," Troyan said. "She had a great game and it was good to see Cal (Jessica Calvini) get those two RBIs there in that third inning as well."

The Mountain Hawks will host Manhattan in a doubleheader Wednesday at Leadership Park with first pitch of game one set for 2:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
