PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Mason Beckman earned his 100th career victory and is one of six Lehigh wrestlers to reach the semifinals on day one of the 112th EIWA Championships Saturday at Jadwin Gym. The Mountain Hawks placed all 10 entrants in the top eight in their respective weight classes and sit in second place in the team standings with 82.5 points, nine behind front-running Cornell.
Â
On the day Lehigh went 20-4 with six falls, two technical falls and two major decisions. At the end of Saturday's action, three Mountain Hawks have officially qualified for the NCAA Championships: junior Randy Cruz (141) and seniors Nathaniel Brown (184) and Max Wessell (285).
Â
"We've been fighting hard," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. We had a couple of opportunities in overtime and we have to win those overtime matches. We have to wrestle at a higher level tomorrow. The first round on paper looked really good but I thought we were a little sluggish. In the second round we wrestled harder but ended up losing a few."
Â
Beckman, the No. 2 seed at 133, began his tournament by avenging an early season loss to Bucknell's Grim Gonzalez by beating the Bison 8-2 in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Beckman dominated Franklin & Marshall's Scott Stevens in a 14-4 major decision that was also the 100th victory of his career. Beckman will face the No. 7 seed Zack Davis of Navy in the semifinals on Sunday.
Â
"He's been wrestling well this last month of the year," Santoro said. "We're excited because he's having a lot of fun out there and that's what it's all about."
Â
Sophomore Darian Cruz moved into the semifinals with two bonus wins at 125. Cruz opened with a 17-2 technical fall over Sacred Heart's Gerard Daly and then used a cement mixer to pin Jeremy Schwartz of Penn in the first period of their quarterfinal bout. In the semifinals, the second-seeded Cruz will face No. 3 seed David Terao of American.
Â
Randy Cruz survived a first round scare against Cornell's Dylan Realbuto but won a third period scramble for the decisive takedown in a 3-2 victory. In the quarterfinals, Cruz converted takedowns in the first and third periods to avenge an earlier loss to Army West Point's Logan Everett 6-1. The third-seeded Cruz will face No. 2 seed Todd Preston of Harvard in the semifinals in a matchup of the last two EIWA Champions at 141.
Â
Freshman Ryan Preisch used a pair of close wins by decision to reach the semifinals at 165. After a hard-fought 5-2 win over Navy's Michael Coleman, the second-seeded Preisch needed a late third period takedown and added a two point near fall to defeat Drexel's Austin Rose 5-1. Preisch will face No. 3 seed Devin Gobbo of Harvard in the semifinals.
Â
Nathaniel Brown's final EIWA tournament began with a first period pin of Columbia's Mike Fetchet. In the quarterfinals, the No. 2 seed scored takedowns in the second and third periods to defeat Bucknell's Tom Sleigh 5-2. Brown will next face Navy's Mathew Miller in a rematch of the 2013 EIWA finals at 174, which Brown won 3-2.
Â
Wessell picked up two bonus wins to reach the semifinals, opening up in the final two periods in a 10-2 major decision over Penn's Patrik Garren and then throwing Army West Point's Trevor Smith to his back for a fall in just 35 seconds. Next up for the No. 2 seeded Wessell is third-seeded Mike Hughes of Hofstra.
Â
Lehigh went 6-3 in the quarterfinal round with two of the three losses coming in overtime. At 149, junior Laike Gardner traded reversals with Bucknell's Victor Lopez in the third period. The match went to overtime tied 3-3 and while Gardner narrowly missed converting the winning takedown, the No. 6 seeded Lopez scored on the counter to win 5-3. Gardner came back in the consolations with a technical fall win over Sacred Heart's Brandon Levesque.
Â
Freshman Ian Brown was edged 3-2 in the tiebreakers by Brown's Justin Staudenmayer in the quarters at 157. Brown was ridden out in the first half of the tiebreaker period and couldn't convert two quality shots in the second half. He bounced back with a first period pin of Harvard's Tyler Tarsi and enters Sunday needing to win his first match, against Army West Point's Russell Parsons, to guarantee qualification for the NCAA Championships.
Â
At 197, senior John Bolich fell victim to a six-point headlock from American's Jeric Kasunic and was then cradled and pinned in the first period in the quarterfinal matchup. Bolich capped Lehigh's first day by tossing Columbia's Troy Hembury to his back for a 53 second fall.
Â
Freshman Gordon Wolf was the only Mountain Hawk to lose in the first round as he dropped a 5-1 decision to Penn's Casey Kent, the No. 2 seed at 174. Wolf battled back with two wins, including a pin in the second round consolations when he reversed Columbia's Zack Hernandez to his back for a fall in 3:34. The lone New Jersey native in Lehigh's lineup, Wolf needs one win on Sunday to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Â
"We lost some heartbreaking matches but overall we wrestled hard," Santoro said. "This is a great conference, but we'll have to have a little better day tomorrow if we want to win this thing. We'll have our opportunities tomorrow. We'll have to take advantage of them but we're excited about where we are right now. After the quarterfinals it was big to come back with three pins and a tech fall. That was huge."
Â
Lehigh holds a 27.5 point lead on Bucknell for third place, while American is fourth with 47.5 points and Navy is fifth with 47. Cornell and Lehigh are the only two teams to place all 10 wrestlers. The Big Red have seven semifinalists and three in the consolations, while the Mountain Hawks have six and four.
