BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored the game's first two goals and wouldn't look back, beating American 10-6 on Saturday for its seventh straight victory. Junior Taylor Tvedt was stellar in goal with 10 saves, seven coming in the first half, while classmate Allison LaBeau continued her strong play with three goals and two assists to reach 40 points on the season. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in Patriot League play.
"We're really excited to get this win, another league win and a home win," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I thought a lot of our girls played well."
Along with LaBeau's five points, junior Lauren Beausoleil and freshman Courtney Henig each scored two goals. Sophomore Haley Wentzel added one goal and one assist. Beausoleil also tallied three groundballs and a draw control while senior Kendall Garden had three groundballs.
Lehigh scored the game's first two goals. After Henig opened the scoring just over four minutes into the game, LaBeau found Beausoleil to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead with 21:18 remaining in the first half. From there, the teams alternated goals over the middle stages of the first half until consecutive scores from LaBeau and Henig gave Lehigh a 5-2 lead with 5:37 on the clock. American added a goal with 3:12 left in the first half to pull within 5-3 after 30 minutes of play.
American pulled within 5-4 less than two minutes into the second half, but the Mountain Hawks responded with a 3-0 run in the span of just 5:34 as free-position goals from LaBeau and Garden followed by a Wentzel unassisted tally gave Lehigh an 8-4 lead with 21:39 on the clock.
From there, the teams traded goals the rest of the way. American pulled within 8-5 at the 19:54 mark, but LaBeau and Beausoleil connected for a second time to give the Mountain Hawks a 9-5 advantage with 13:09 remaining.
The Eagles scored at the 1:41 mark, but LaBeau scored her third goal at the 22-second mark to account for the 10-6 final.
The Mountain Hawks held a 27-21 edge in final shots while Lehigh held a 14-11 advantage in groundballs and 10-8 edge in draw controls. Tvedt's 10 saves came across American goalkeeper Fiona Geier, who tallied seven saves.
"Taylor was terrific, especially at some key points in the game when we needed a save and a stop back there," said Redfern. "She came up huge."
The Mountain Hawks now hit the road for two straight league contests, at Navy next Wednesday (Mar. 30) and Boston University next Saturday (Apr. 2).
"There's nothing like momentum," said Redfern. "This team is winning, they're feeling good and they're gaining confidence. It's the perfect setup going into our next game."
