WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The Lehigh baseball team scored the final five runs in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Manhattan to capture a 6-4 come-from-behind win at Dutchess Stadium. The late-inning offense coupled with a shutdown bullpen performance helped the Mountain Hawks bounce back from a 10-2 loss in the day's opener. Lehigh moves to 7-14 overall with the day's results, while Manhattan sits at 6-14.
"Our pitchers did a good job of attacking the zone in game two," said head coach Sean Leary. "Matt Kozemchak only gave up two earned runs in six innings and Mark Washington and Kevin Boswick were great in relief. We executed pretty well offensively in the late innings of game two and it was nice to see some of our key guys come up with clutch hits, which we'll need them to continue to do in league play."
Senior Mike Garzillo recorded two big RBI to lead the Mountain Hawk bats, including the double that scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Juniors Connor Donovan and David Young notched three hits apiece in the two games combined, while Donovan also recorded two RBI. Relief pitchers Mark Washington and Kevin Boswick kept the Jaspers scoreless for the final three frames to help Lehigh to the 6-4 nightcap win.
The Jaspers used four hits and a sacrifice fly to take a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first of the day's nightcap. Game two junior starter Matt Kozemchak limited Manhattan to one hit in the next two frames before Lehigh was able to get a run back in the fourth. Garzillo led off the frame by drawing a base on balls before Young sent a one-out single to right. A balk moved the two runners up a base before an RBI groundout from Donovan trimmed the Manhattan lead to 2-1.
Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Jaspers used a two-run double from Anthony Rondon to extend their lead to 4-1. Lehigh answered right away in the top of the seventh as senior Mackey Price was hit by a pitch with one out before freshman Jeff Shanfeldt drew a walk and junior Jacen Nalesnik sent an RBI single to center. A base hit from sophomore James Bleming was followed by an RBI single from Garzillo before junior Patrick Donnelly sent a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game at 4-4.
Washington kept the Jaspers off the board for the next two innings to send the game to the top of the ninth. Nalesnik reached first on a Manhattan error to open the ninth before a Bleming sacrifice bunt moved Nalesnik to second. Garzillo then smacked a ground-rule double to plate the go-ahead run before an RBI infield single from Young added an insurance tally and gave Lehigh a 6-4 lead heading into the final half inning.
Washington got the first out in the bottom of the ninth before a walk brought on Boswick. Boswick got Christian Santisteban to ground into a double play to end the game and earn the save.
Washington picked up his third win of the season after throwing 2.1 one-hit frames. Kozemchak finished with a line of four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts in six full innings of work. Manhattan reliever Shawn Kanwisher suffered the loss.
Game one senior starter Kevin Long kept Manhattan hitless through the first two frames until a leadoff Jaspers single was followed by three walks to put Manhattan on the board. Sophomore Frank Rossetti came on in relief of Long before three more singles helped Manhattan up its lead to 5-0 through three frames.
The Mountain Hawks were able to get two runs back in the top of the fifth as Young and Donovan roped back-to-back doubles to open the frame. A wild pitch then moved Donovan to third before Price sent a sacrifice fly to center to pull the Mountain Hawks within 5-2.
The Jaspers then countered with one run in the bottom of the fifth before plating four in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead that Lehigh was never able to overcome despite freshman Chris Butera keeping the Jaspers hitless for the final two frames.
Long suffered the loss, while Manhattan starter Joey Rocchietti picked up the win.
Lehigh returns to action with a pair of home games against Delaware and Saint Peter's Tuesday and Wednesday at Legacy Park before opening up Patriot League action at Bucknell next weekend. Free video of the two home games will be available on the Patriot League Network.
