BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team fell 2-0 in a tight pitchers' duel Friday afternoon at Legacy Park. Freshman starter Ethan Frohman threw seven strong innings, while senior Kevin Boswick hurled two hitless frames, but the Lehigh bats weren't able to get much off Manhattan ace Tom Cosgrove. The Mountain Hawks fall to 6-13 overall, while Manhattan improves to 5-13.
"Manhattan's starting pitcher threw the best game we've seen so far this year," said head coach Sean Leary. "Ethan and Kevin pitched pretty outstanding today as well and threw the ball the way they're capable of. This is a good game for us to build off of because some of the top arms in the league will throw games like Manhattan's pitcher did today."
After a scoreless first inning, Manhattan was able to load the bases with no outs in the top of the second, but Frohman limited the damage as a Manhattan sacrifice fly put the Jaspers ahead 1-0.
After the second inning, Frohman allowed just three hits through the next four frames to keep the Jasper lead at 1-0 until the top of the eighth inning. Manhattan opened the eighth with a leadoff double and a bunt single before Boswick took the mound in relief of the rookie. The Jaspers used a sacrifice fly from Christian Santisteban to add an insurance run, but Boswick retired the final six Manhattan batters of the game.
Lehigh was only able to scatter four hits off Cosgrove who earned the win. Junior Patrick Donnelly sent a one-out single through the left side in the bottom of the ninth, but Jasper closer Shawn Kanwisher got a strikeout and caught stealing to end the game and earn the save.
Frohman finished with a line of two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Lehigh will travel to Manhattan Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader in the backend of the three-game series.
