Lehigh beats Holy Cross in Patriot League opener, 12-7 for sixth straight win

3/19/2016 4:26:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Allison LaBeau led the offense with seven points while classmate Julianne D'Orazio led the defense with a career-high five caused turnovers as the Lehigh women's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 12-7 in its Patriot League opener on Saturday. The win marked the Mountain Hawks' sixth in a row as they improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

"We're excited to win at home," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I think our team is really focused on getting these home wins. It's always great to get a Patriot League win."

For a second straight home game, LaBeau tallied two goals and three assists in the first half, finishing the game with three goals and four assists, the third time in her last five games with six or more points. Junior Lauren Beausoleil added three goals for her third-career hat trick and first this season. D'Orazio filled up the stat sheet with a career-high five caused turnovers along with four groundballs, three draw controls and a goal.

"I thought Julianne was terrific," said Redfern. "She came up with big plays when it mattered. She's a great student of the game and has terrific lacrosse IQ. She knows how to get the job done on the defensive end. She's absolutely a difference maker."

One area Lehigh particularly impressed was in draw controls, holding a dominant 16-5 edge.

"We're working hard on our draw control," said Redfern. "It's definitely a priority for this team to continue to make progress and I'm happy with our performance on the draw today."

Holy Cross scored 1:20 into the game, but the Mountain Hawks responded with the next four goals. LaBeau had a hand in three of those tallies, scoring twice while assisting on a Beausoleil goal that evened the score at one.

The Crusaders pulled within 4-2 with 19:38 on the clock, but Lehigh scored the next two and three of the next four goals as D'Orazio's second goal of the season gave the Mountain Hawks a 7-3 advantage with 11:25 left in the first half. The teams traded goals in the final minute as Lehigh took an 8-4 lead into halftime.

The second half didn't feature much scoring as Beausoleil opened the scoring at the 19:20 mark off an assist from LaBeau. Holy Cross scored the next two to pull within 9-7 with 10:50 left in the second half, but the Mountain Hawks scored three late goals on an empty net to finish off the 12-7 victory.

Final shots were 23-18 in favor of Lehigh while the Crusaders held a 21-15 edge in groundballs. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt finished with seven saves, including many timely stops in the second half. Tvedt made six saves, allowing just two goals over the final 30 minutes. She stopped all three shots sent her way after the Crusaders pulled within 9-7.

"Every Patriot League game has huge importance," said Redfern. "We're fortunate to start off at home with a couple games in league play. Any win in Patriot League play is a great win."

Lehigh will return home next Saturday to host American at 12 p.m.
