Lehigh starts strong at spring-opening Patriot Spring Intercollegiate

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Playing in its first event of the spring season, the Lehigh men's golf team sits in second place after the opening 18 holes of the four-team Patriot Spring Intercollegiate, hosted by Bucknell on the Estates Course at PGA National.
 
Lehigh's scoring team had an outstanding front nine, with a team score of four over par at the halfway point of the round. The Mountain Hawks hit some struggles on the back nine, coming in at 19 over par to finish day one at 21 over par 309. Patriot League rival Navy passed Lehigh on the back side as the Midshipmen finished at 302 to take a seven stroke lead into Tuesday's final round. Host Bucknell sits two strokes behind Lehigh at 311 while UMass-Lowell is fourth at 323.
 
Sophomore Billy Johns was Lehigh's low player on Monday, shooting two over par 74 that included an even par 36 on the front nine. Johns is one of three players at 74, two strokes behind the 18-hole leader Connor Tallman of Navy.
 
Freshmen Max Redetzke and Johnny Hsu turned in Lehigh's second and third-lowest rounds. Redetzke shot 77 and is tied for 13th place, while Hsu is tied for 16th after a 78.
 
Senior Dave Olexson joined Johns in shooting even par on the front nine but a 44 on the back side left Olexson in 22nd place with an 80.
 
Lehigh's fifth scoring player was freshman Lee Hammerschmidt, who shot 86 and is tied for 30th with classmate Tim Wolak, who is competing as an individual.
 
The Patriot Spring Intercollegiate concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes from the Estates Course at PGA National.
