LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-1 halftime lead and wouldn't look back, on its way to a dominant 16-5 win over Liberty on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh scored six goals in the span of 7:45 midway through the first half to turn a 1-0 lead into an 8-0 advantage, and the Mountain Hawks wouldn't look back.
"Part of our game plan was to go out and execute early, finish our shots and have balanced scoring," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "The team did a great job of opening a nice lead."
A pair of freshmen led the Lehigh offense as Courtney Henig posted a career-high five points (four goals, one assist) while Annie Pearson recorded her first-career point in the first half and finished the afternoon with four points (three goals, one assist). Freshman Jane Henderson also scored her first two career goals while Kaitlyn Quinn scored one. In total, the freshmen combined for 10 goals and two assists.
"I think our freshmen attackers did a great job today," said Redfern. "Jane had some goals early and Annie did some really nice things. Courtney and Annie both put the ball away on the eight meter. As a group, the freshmen attackers got the job done."
Sophomore Haley Wentzel tallied two goals and an assist while junior Allison LaBeau had a goal and three assists. Defensively, senior Nicole Isdaner caused two turnovers while freshman Olivia Kelly scooped three groundballs. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt also recorded three groundballs and a caused turnover, already her sixth caused turnover of the season, tied for third on the team.
Henderson opened the scoring exactly five minute into the game then with just over 20 minutes left in the first half, Wentzel converted a free-position goal to help spark six goals in less than eight minutes. Eventually, the Lehigh lead swelled to 11-0 following a Quinn goal with 2:25 left in the first half.
Liberty got on the board with 46 seconds remaining in the first half and scored again early in the second, but the Mountain Hawks answered with a 4-0 run, which included consecutive goals from Henig, to give Lehigh a 15-2 lead. The Flames scored three of the game' final four goals, but it wasn't nearly enough.
"Our game plan was to concentrate on team defense, play together and communicate," said Redfern. "I think we were much better with that today than our last game. I thought our draw unit stepped up as well, which was an area we had struggled."
Final shots were 28-9 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 19-14 edge in groundballs and 12-10 advantage in draw controls. Tvedt finished with three saves, allowing just three goals over the first 53:27 before being replaced by sophomore Elizabeth Nussbaum.
"Today was great momentum on the road and we're happy to win," said Redfern. "A lot of our players did their jobs today; it was a great team win."
The Mountain Hawks now return to action at Davidson on Tuesday to face the Wildcats. Opening draw is set for 6:30 p.m.
