Mountain Hawks complete strong opening weekend with 4-1 win at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Lehigh softball team bounced back from an 8-0 loss to UNC-Greensboro on Saturday to down the Spartans 4-1 Sunday in their final game at the UNCG Invitational. Junior Christine Campbell allowed just three hits and an unearned run to improve to 3-0 on the season. With the win, Lehigh stands at 4-1 after its first weekend of play.
Campbell faced the minimum through the first three innings, working around a hit batter in the second inning with a double play.
Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when senior Morgan Decker drew a one-out walk. Pinch runner Ashley Quidolit stole second base and score the game's first run when junior Vicky Lattanzio doubled to left field.
UNC-Greensboro (6-6) put together back-to-back hits to open the bottom of the fourth and after a sacrifice put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Campbell induced two groundouts to end the threat.
The Mountain Hawks extended their lead with two runs in the fifth. Senior MacKenzie Velasquez singled to center with one out and moved to second on the first of four Spartan errors. Senior Alexis Watanabe singled down the left field line, scoring Velasquez with Lehigh's second run. Two batters later, Lattanzio came up with the bases loaded and brought sophomore Nicole Yozzo home with a groundout to shortstop.
Velasquez plated Lehigh's fourth run in the top of the seventh after leading off with a single, moving to second on a Yozzo sacrifice and scoring when Watanabe reached on an error.
UNCG's Danielle Vega singled to lead off the home seventh inning. Pinch runner Alexis Overdiep broke up the shutout when she scored after Rebecca Kale reached on an error.
Campbell struck out three and did not walk a batter although she did hit two.
Danica Bishop started for UNCG and took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Velasquez had two of Lehigh's five hits against the Spartans.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action with five games over three days at the Winthrop Invitational, beginning Friday with games against No. 18/17 Kentucky and host Winthrop beginning at 1 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C. Lehigh will also face Albany twice plus South Carolina State on the weekend.
