Lehigh completes season sweep of Lafayette with 80-65 road win

EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team earned a dominant wire-to-wire win at archrival Lafayette Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks picked up a 80-65 victory at the Kirby Sports Center. Junior Lexi Martins, sophomore Quinci Mann and senior Kerry Kinek combined for 55 of Lehigh's 80 points to help the Mountain Hawks earn their first season sweep of Lafayette since the 2011-12 season. Lehigh moves to 16-10 overall and 9-6 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette falls to 6-19 overall and 4-11 in league action.(2/20/2016) Women's Basketball at Lafayette, 2/20/16
"It feels good to get a win and the team did a good job executing today," said head coach Sue Troyan. "We really challenged our lineup to start with energy on the defensive end and they did a great job of that today. I'm really happy with the effort today and hopefully we can carry this momentum into the last three regular-season games."
Martins tallied her 20th double-double of the season with a team-best 23 points and ten rebounds. Martins' performance came from a 10-for-16 showing from the field. Mann followed with 19 points, while Kinek chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior Elizabeth Sharlow followed with nine points and five rebounds. Classmate Amina Affini dished a team-best three assists.
Four Leopards scored in double figures, led by Jamie O'Hare with 14 points.
Lehigh finished the game shooting an impressive 51.6 percent (32-for-62) from the field, 25 percent (5-for-20) from three-point range and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks held Lafayette to a 37.7 (20-for-53) field goal percentage, 44.4 percent clip (8-for-18) mark from downtown and 81 percent (17-for-21) mark from downtown.
Both teams converted a layup on their first possession before a two-minute scoreless streak was broken by seven-straight points from Mann that gave the Mountain Hawks a 9-2 lead with 6:13 left in the first quarter. Lehigh's defense forced four Leopard turnovers and two shot clock violations in the opening five minutes before a layup from Ashley Lutz snapped Lafayette's four-minute scoreless streak at the 5:15 mark. Four points from Martins and a jumper from junior Kayla Burton followed to extend Lehigh's lead to 15-4 with just over three minutes left in the term. The Leopards responded with seven-straight points over the next two minutes to pull within 15-11, but Lehigh tallied the final four points of the quarter to take a 19-11 lead.
Lafayette scored seven of the second quarter's first nine points to trim Lehigh's lead to 21-18 just under a minute into the period. Baskets from Martins and Kinek had Lehigh back up by six at 26-20 with 5:35 on the second-quarter clock. The Leopards were within three on two occasions in the following minutes, but a three-pointer from Burton, a pair of Sharlow layups and two made free throws from sophomore Mae Williams comprised a 9-0 Lehigh run that took two minutes off the clock and gave the Mountain Hawks a 40-27 lead with just under two minutes on the first-half clock. Lafayette closed the half on a 5-1 run, but Lehigh was able to carry a 41-32 lead into the locker room.
Both teams were hot to start the third quarter as the score quickly ran to 49-40 less than four minutes into the term. A pair of Kinek layups snapped a two-plus minute scoreless streak and put Lehigh ahead 53-40 with just over three minutes to play. The Mountain Hawks held onto a 58-44 lead two minutes later following baskets from Mann and Martins, but the Leopards scored the final five points of the quarter to pull within single digits at 58-49 heading into the fourth term.
A 10-3 run over the first five and a half minutes of the fourth quarter helped Lehigh stretch its lead to 68-52 with 5:41 left in the game. The Mountain Hawks' defense held the Leopards to just three field goals in the final quarter as Lehigh continued to roll en route to the 80-65 win.
