BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced matchups for the upcoming National Championship Dual Series and No. 6 Lehigh will face a familiar foe. The Mountain Hawks will make the short trip to Piscataway, N.J. to face former EIWA rival Rutgers Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
The NWCA matched the dual meet champions of six conferences (ACC, Big 12, EIWA, EWL, MAC and Southern) plus two wild card selections to visit eight Big Ten schools for eight separate duals, beginning Friday and running through Monday.
Lehigh won the EIWA dual title with a 7-0 mark in conference duals. The Mountain Hawks enter the National Championship Dual Series at 13-2 after a record-setting 54-0 win over Bloomsburg on Sunday. Lehigh had won 10 consecutive duals prior to its 28-9 loss to No. 1 Penn State in front of a Lehigh record crowd of 5,909 Friday night.
Rutgers, ranked 14th in last week's NWCA poll, improved to 15-5 with road wins at Indiana and No. 23 Purdue over the weekend. The Scarlet Knights will host Drexel Friday in a previously scheduled dual before welcoming the Mountain Hawks for Saturday night's National Duals contest. Rutgers went 5-4 in Big Ten dual competition. The Mountain Hawks and Scarlet Knights faced six common opponents this season. Both teams defeated Cornell, Franklin & Marshall and Princeton. Lehigh defeated Minnesota and Oklahoma but lost to Nebraska, while Rutgers dropped one point decisions to both the Golden Gophers and Sooners and edged the Cornhuskers on criteria.
Lehigh and Rutgers met 44 times between 1941 and 2014 with Lehigh winning 42 of the 44 duals in the series. The Scarlet Knights' two wins came in 1950 and then 2013. A 17-16 Rutgers win at the RAC snapped a 38-dual Lehigh winning streak against its border rival. The most recent dual between Lehigh and Rutgers was a 27-9 Mountain Hawks victory inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on February 8, 2014. Rutgers left the EIWA for the Big Ten following the 2103-14 season.
