Lehigh drops season opener to No. 6 Penn State, 13-6

2/12/2016 6:54:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team hung tough against No. 6 Penn State in long stretches, but the Nittany Lions proved too much as they downed the Mountain Hawks 13-6 on Friday in the season opener for both teams. Junior Allison LaBeau led Lehigh with three points behind two goals and one assist while junior Taylor Tvedt made 12 saves in goal.
"I'm happy with our effort," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We had a couple lulls when we had some turnovers that Penn State was able to quickly capitalize on. An experienced team like Penn State is going to capitalize on your mistakes."

Tvedt added two groundballs and two caused turnovers, intercepting a pair of passes. Sophomores Kierstyn Voiro and Haley Wentzel along with junior Lauren Beausoleil tallied three groundballs apiece while senior Kendall Garden posted a goal, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.

"I think this is tremendous experience for our team," said Redfern. "It's the best competitive experience you can get. For our younger players who really need to grow up against that type of high pressure and aggressive play, I thought today was great competition."

The Nittany Lions opened a 5-0 lead late in the first half before LaBeau scored her first goal of the game with 7:34 on the clock. The goal started a run for the Mountain Hawks, who scored three of the final five first-half goals to pull within 7-3 after 30 minutes of play. LaBeau added her second at the 4:25 mark while Beausoleil scored off a free position shot as the first-half buzzer sounded.

Like the first half, Penn State scored the first five second-half goals to take a 12-3 advantage midway through the stanza, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go away quietly. Lehigh ended the game with three of the final four goals as freshman scored her first-career goal at the 12:55 mark and Voiro pulled Lehigh within 12-5 less than three minutes later. After a Penn State goal, Garden scored off a free position shot at 6:36 to round out the scoring.

Final shots were 32-22 in favor of Penn State while the Nittany Lions held a 19-16 edge in groundballs and 14-6 advantage in draw controls. Lehigh outshot Penn State 15-12 in the second half. The Mountain Hawks were 16-of-19 on clears while the Nittany Lions were 13-of-16.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 21 when they host Yale at 1 p.m.
