BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team looked back to a strong 2016 season at the program's annual banquet, held Saturday at the University Center. Head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer recognized the Mountain Hawks' five seniors, Janelle High, Marissa Glatt, Kassidy Green, Gabby Tofig and Julia Ward, while announcing the team's annual award.
Â
Earning Athlete of the Year was junior Jackie Renda, who was named a second team All-Patriot League honoree this season. Renda started all 17 games as a stable force in the midfield, tallying three assists and a defensive save while having a strong impact at both ends of the field. She played a key role in leading the Mountain Hawks to four straight wins mid-season, the program's longest winning streak since 1986. Lehigh also pitched three shutouts, most since 2004, including two straight against Patriot League opponents for the first time in school history.
Â
Sophomore Kendra Sandhu was named Most Improved Player following a breakthrough campaign which saw her emerge on Lehigh's back line. Sandhu played in 15 games, starting eight while tallying a pair of defensive saves and playing a key role in the success of the Mountain Hawks' defense, which allowed its fewest goals since 2004.
Â
Presented to the player who made a substantive, yet unrecognized contribution to the team, the Unsung Hero Award went to senior Kassidy Green. A mainstay in the midfield, Green played in all 17 games with 16 starts and recorded one goal and three assists. Green earned an assist during Lehigh's first win over Rider since 2007 while scoring a goal at La Salle and tallying an assist in wins over Towson and Brown.
Â
Given to the player whose character, spirit, dedication, and leadership best represent the team and program, the Mountain Hawk Award went to junior student manager Alexis Arancio, whose positive attitude and dedication played a critical role in the team's success.
Â
Junior Laura Yuh received the Scholar-Athlete Award for her success, on and off the field. On the field, she emerged as a key member of Lehigh's defense. Yuh started all 17 games and recorded a pair of defensive saves while helping the Mountain Hawks allow their fewest shots since 2007 and fewest shots on goal in at least the last 15 years.
Â
The Coaches Award, given to the player who is selfless in her actions and may go unnoticed by others, was presented to freshman Trish Reilly. Reilly's impact has gone far beyond on-field statistics, performing every task, whether it's in practice or a game, with great focus and determination. She got into 14 games her freshman campaign, including one start.
Â
Lehigh finished its season with five wins over its last eight games, highlighted by a four-game winning streak. The Mountain Hawks defeated eventual No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament Holy Cross, while staying alive in the race for the postseason right until the very end. Lehigh improved its final RPI by 13 spots, tied for the eighth largest improvement in the nation.
