
Women’s Track and Field Competes at Villanova Open

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lehigh women's track and field team competed in its first meet of the 2016 calendar year on Friday at the Villanova Open. The event took place at Villanova's brand new Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex in New York City. The Mountain Hawks placed fifth out of 11 teams with 62.5 points, finishing between Delaware and Morgan State. Villanova took first place with 109.5 points.
Freshman Clare Severe turned out an impressive showing in the 800 meter run, finishing third overall (2:18.37) out of 48 competitors. Sophomore Hannah Leskow also ran a strong race in 2:23.68, good enough for 14th place. Freshman Stephanie Hayes followed close behind in 21st, crossing the line in 2:28.81.
Sophomore Laura Barnes also cracked the top three in the one mile run, finishing third in 5:13.43. Junior Brenna Clark was not far behind, finishing fifth with a time of 5:15.06. Lehigh's success in the distance events continued with freshman Maura Henderson placing fourth in the 3,000 meter run (10:23.05), ahead of freshman Stacie Nadel, who finished 10th (10:41.69) in the race.
Sophomore Hanna Brosky, junior Lindsay Voltz and junior Soraya Theard all finished in the upper half of the field in the 400 meter dash. Broksy led the way with an 18th place finish (1:00.43), followed by Voltz in 21st place (1:00.86) and Theard (1:01.35) in 24th.
Junior Katie Hatler darted to a 19th place finish out of 55 competitors in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish in 26.55 seconds. Hatler also qualified for the finals of the 60 meter hurdles, before placing sixth (9.07) in the finals.
In the field events, junior Courtney Avery led the way for the Brown and White with a third place, 1.70 meter leap in the high jump. Freshman Kaitlyn Toman finished the pole vault tied for fifth at 3.20 meters and senior Gabrielle Wardle finished 10th overall in the long jump (5.23 meters). Junior Kiana Wright and freshman Noreen Byrne finished back-to-back in the triple jump with leaps of (10.83/9th) and (10.70/10th), respectively.
In the throws, freshman Nia Baker paced the Mountain Hawks in ninth place with a shot put of 11.83 meters. Sophomore Amanda Youngblood (11.14 meters/12th) and Sarah Cassidy (11.09 meters/13th) also competed in the 29-person shot put event. Youngblood added a top-five finish in the weight throw, taking fourth in the event with a toss of 14.38 meters. Teammate Michaela Bubak fared even better, finishing in third place overall with a throw of 14.77 meters.
Lehigh will return home to Rauch Fieldhouse next Saturday to host the annual Angry Birds Invitational. The day's events are scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. and complete meet information can be found here.
