Lehigh Women Strong in Pair of Saturday Meets

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team competed in a pair of meets this weekend with Friday/Saturday's Thundering Herd Invitational on the campus of Marshall University, and the 24th Annual John Covert Classic at Rauch Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Thundering Herd Invitational – Huntington, W.V.
On Friday at Marshall, Lehigh assistant coach Brooke Astor, competing as an unattached athlete, won the pentathlon with a score of 3,625. Senior Gabrielle Wardle finished closely behind in third place overall, just one point out of second place with a score of 3,432. Wardle's highlights for the event include a first place showing in the high jump, a third place time in the 60m hurdles and a fifth place mark in the long jump. Astor won the pentathlon's 60m hurdles and long jump, and placed third in the 800 meter run, high jump and shot put. Tyler Bannister (15th/2,795) and Olivia Reinold (17th/2,748) also represented Lehigh in the pentathlon.
The events continued on Saturday with Courtney Avery capturing first place in the high jump, setting a new meet record and tying both the Jeff Small Track facility record and her own Lehigh school record with a jump of 1.75 meters. Britany Le Jouan finished in sixth place overall in the field of 26 competitors, clearing the bar at 1.65m.

John Covert Classic – Bethlehem, Pa.
On the track back in Bethlehem, Katie Hatler won the 60m hurdles for the second straight meet in 8.92 seconds, tying a season-best time. Fellow junior Natalie Jacobs finished fourth overall (9.24), and Noreen Byrne finished eighth overall after winning her heat in 9.58.
Hatler kept the ball rolling in the 60m hurdles, leading the Brown and White with a third place finish of 8.13, finishing back-to-back with teammate Liyala Dickens (8.16). Dickens also had a strong showing by leading the team with a fifth place overall finish of 26.95 in the 200 meter dash, with Leah Ferguson coming in ninth overall in the field of 42 finishers. Kristen Lavallee also competed for the Mountain Hawks, crossing the line in 17th place. Lavallee later led Lehigh with a fourth place tally in the 400 meter run.
Lindsay Voltz led a trio of Lehigh runners who finished in the top four of the 500 meter dash. Voltz took the top spot in 1:21.45 ahead of Tyler Scanlin in second place, and Natalie Jacobs in fourth. Rachel Okun added a runner-up performance of 2:21.90 for the women in the 800 meter run.
The 1,000 meter run was dominated by Lehigh, with Maura Henderson, Laura Barnes and Stephanie Hayes comfortably completing the sweep of spots one-through-three, with Henderson pacing the group in 3:02.14.
In the mile run, Marissa Karl and Hannah Leskow used strong final laps to overtake the top two places, as Karl pulled away to win the race in 5:07.08, with Leskow right behind her in 5:10.68. Ann O'Connell ran a strong race with a fourth place mark of 5:12.80, one spot ahead of Stacie Nadel (5:18.49).
Brenna Clark registered another W for the Brown and White of 10:33.38 in the 3,000 meters. Samantha Lerner and Jennifer Burke joined her in the top 10 in eighth and ninth places, respectively.
Amanda Youngblood powered the Mountain Hawks with victories in the weight throw and shot put, setting new personal-bests in both. She rose above the competition with a mark of 15.38 meters in the weight throw and 12.99 meters in the shot put. Michaela Bubak (2nd/15.15), Nia Baker (4th/14.27) and Paige Grossman (5th/14.17) helped Lehigh dominate the weight throw, taking four of the top five spots in the event.
Elsewhere in the field, freshman pole vaulter Kaitlyn Toman set a new collegiate personal best mark of 3.50m, a height of 0.30 meters better than her previous season-high to vault her way to a second place finish.
Courtney Wu finished seventh in the long jump with a new PR of 5.21 meters, and leapt to a fifth place spot in the triple jump (10.60m).
Lehigh will compete again on Friday and Saturday next weekend in New York at the Armory Invitational and the Villanova Invitational.
