BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After not being touched for four decades, Lucas Warning has now broken the Lehigh's men's indoor shot put record for the second time in as many weeks, setting a new mark of 17.62 meters in Saturday's John Covert Classic at Rauch Fieldhouse. Warning, who broke John Hill's 1972 benchmark of 17.40 by one centimeter two weeks ago, blew the previous mark out of the water Saturday by 0.21 meters. The Mertztown, Pa. native won the event by nearly 2.20 meters over the next closest competitor.
In addition to the Covert Classic, the team also sent a pair of athletes to the Thundering Herd Invitational on the campus of Marshall University.
Thundering Herd Invitational - Huntington, W.V.
Trevor Knowles came close to breaking his own school record by winning the heptathlon with a score of 5,030 points. The mark is his second best personal score, eclipsed only by his indexed score of 5,053 from the Lehigh Fast Times Meet in December. He was the only heptathlete on Saturday to score over 4,900 point mark.
While competing in the heptathlon, Knowles won both the 1,000 meter run (2:44.56) and 60m hurdles (8.72 seconds), finished second in the shot put (12.18m), tied for second in the pole vault (4.55m), and placed fourth in the 60m dash (7.33). Ryan Givens placed eighth overall in the heptathlon field of 14 competitors, highlighted by a fourth place finish in the high jump and sixth place in the long jump.
John Covert Classic - Bethlehem, Pa.
Warning's record breaker highlighted the day for Lehigh at the Covert Classic. After flirting with the record at Monday's dual meet vs. Lafayette, where he threw 17.37 meters, he rose to the occasion on Saturday and finished 2.19 meters ahead of the second place competitor. Freshman Alexander Rodgers finished just outside the top five, placing sixth with a new personal best distance of 13.85 meters.
Lehigh's Adeolu Adesida, who competed unattached, led the way in the high jump, clearing the bar at 2.15 meters, 0.30 meters higher than the second place finisher. Tyler John and Beau Whitman pole vaulted their way to back-to-back finishes of second (4.40m) and third (4.40m) places, respectively, with Max Jordan not far behind in sixth place (4.25m).
The triple jump saw Fritz Isaac take third place (13.84m), ahead of teammate Michael Gooding in sixth place (13.36m). Isaac added another third place tally on the track in the 60 meter hurdles (8.44 seconds).
On the track, Lehigh grabbed several victories, including Michael Camera's 7.16 second finish in the 60 meter dash. Christopher Del Rossi led the Mountain Hawks in seventh place of the 200 meter dash (23.44), where Emre Soybas and Jake Sabatini both rounded out the top 10 in the field of more than 50 competitors.
Lehigh completed the sweep of the podium in the 3,000 meter run, led by Alexander Fitzgerald in PR time of 8:28.20. Seniors Evan Hardy and Sean Burke followed close behind in spots two and three. Henry Paul (7th/8:58.59), Jack Curran (8th/9:06.25) and Brian Arita (9th/9:10.16) all helped Lehigh grab six of the top nine spots in the event.
Samuel Layding paced the field in the 5,000 meter run, breaking the tape in 14:45.02, a full 46 seconds ahead of teammate Evan Ward who finished in second place (15:31.12). Nicholas Hirdt helped Lehigh grab three of the top four spots with his finish of 15:46.57.
Soybas added an eighth place tally of 53.00 seconds in the 800 meters, one spot ahead of teammate Robert Smith. Christopher Mascetti and Kyle Berman registered top five finishes with Mascetti finishing fourth (2:38.43) and Berman fifth (2:39.37) in the 1,000 meter run.
John Tolbert was the runner-up of the one mile run, crossing the finish line in 4:28.60. David Mugavero's fourth place time of 4:36.80 landed him in sixth place overall.
Lehigh also registered a win in the relays, with the 4x800 team of Mascetti, James Chappell, Mitchell Daddario and Tolbert combining on a winning time of 8:27.94. In the 4x400 relay, James Clements, Tom Troxell, Robert Hugin and Robert Iulo raced to a second place finish (3:27.49).
