
Warning Breaks Decades Old Record at Angry Birds Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lucas Warning made Lehigh track and field history on Saturday by breaking a four-decades-old school record in the shot put. His shot put distance of 17.41 meters surpassed the previous benchmark of 17.40 meters, set by John Hill in 1972. The record had been the longest standing record in Lehigh indoor track and field history. The distance was good enough for second place at the meet and was also an IC4A/ECAC qualifying mark.
Fritz Isaac and Sean Burke also netted wins for Lehigh at the meet, with Isaac taking the 60 meter hurdle crown and Burke winning the 5,000 meter run. As a team, the Mountain Hawks placed third out of five teams at the Angry Birds Invitational at Rauch Fieldhouse. The Monmouth Hawks, St. Joseph's Hawks, Winthrop Eagles and Penn Quakers all joined the Mountain Hawks at the annual meet.
Lehigh's Adeolu Adesida, who was competing as an unattached participant, also earned a win on the day, topping the field in the men's high jump. Adesida, who is the school's indoor and outdoor record holder in the event, cleared the bar at 2.10 meters.
The men' began the day on the track with the 5,000 meter run, where Burke picked up the win for the Mountain Hawks, crossing the finish in 15:34.56. Alexander Fitzgerald also scored distance points for Lehigh in the mile run, taking sixth overall in 4:24.18.
Isaac highlighted his strong day with a win in the 60 meter hurdles, racing to a top time of 8.42 seconds. Teammates Knowles (3rd/8.76 seconds) and Robert Hugin (4th/8.79 seconds) also had strong performances to help Lehigh take three of the top four places.
Senior Tyler John and sophomore Trevor Knowles powered Lehigh in the pole vault, grabbing two of the top three spots with John clearing the bar in second place at 4.57 meters, and Knowles in third at 4.42 meters.
Lehigh had three athletes score in the long jump, headed by junior Daniel Boardman in third place (6.84 meters). Junior Daniel Reichenbach placed one spot behind in fourth place overall with a leap of 6.78m, and freshman Ryan Givens scored one team point in eighth place (6.41m). Isaac was the highest finishing Mountain Hawk in the triple jump, lifting the team with a fourth place, 13.79 meter leap.
Freshman Alexander Rodgers scored for Lehigh in the shot put, finishing second on the team to only Warning's record performance, placing eighth overall with a distance of 11.56 meters.
Junior Christopher Del Rossi registered points by tying for sixth in the 400 meter dash (51.28 seconds). Tom Troxell rounded out the top-10 in the event after winning his heat with a time of 52.17 seconds. Michael Camera was the first member of the Brown and White to cross the line in the 60 meter dash, tying for 11th overall with a sprint of 7.30 seconds.
Ryan Cooney raced into the top three of the 3,000 meter event, placing third in the field of 22 in 8:35.16. Samuel Layding also picked up team points for his eighth place mark (8:45.67).
Del Rossi followed that up with a fourth place tally in the 200 meter dash in 23.45. Jake Sabatini, Emre Soybas and Troxell earned points for finishing in spots six-through-eight of the 200 meter dash.
Clay Stabolepszy added an eighth place time of 2:00.11 in the 800 meter run, finishing two places ahead of Seamus Cullinane 2:01.09.
The 4,000 distance medley relay team of Cullinane, Stabolepszy, James Chappell and Fitzgerald took third place in 10:49.92.
Lehigh's 4x400 relay team took fifth place as James Clements, Robert Iulo, Troxell and Robert Smith all combined on a 3:31.52 mark.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday at Rauch Fieldhouse when they will host rival Lafayette in the two school's annual dual meet. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
