Lehigh and Saint Francis ends scoreless in double overtime

LORETTO, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team played Saint Francis (Pa.) to a double-overtime scoreless draw Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawk defense kept a Red Flash offense that has outscored its opponents 7-1 over their last three games off the board, but Lehigh wasn't able to find the back of the net either as the Mountain Hawks settled for their first tie of the season. Lehigh moves to 4-2-1 overall, while the Red Flash now stand at 3-1-3.

"We feel really good about getting a win and a draw on the road and it was a successful weekend for us," said head coach Dean Koski. "Saint Francis was organized defensively and good on the attack and they certainly made the game challenging at times. I thought our back four was strong today and Joe Bogan really came up big a few times. We struggled a bit on the attack today, but all-in-all I'm happy with this weekend's results."

Senior Jamie Luchini recorded the first shot of the game in the fifth minute, but Saint Francis keeper Andrew Garcia was there to make the stop. Lehigh sophomore keeper Joe Bogan was forced to make three saves in a ten-minute period thanks to a trio of attempts from Calvin and Connor Rezende. The Mountain Hawk defense only allowed Saint Francis to fire off one more shot in the final 30 minutes of the opening half, while the Lehigh offense made four attempts, but the contest went into halftime scoreless.

The Mountain Hawks registered the first few chances of the second half, with a pair of corner kicks and a shot from sophomore Doyle Tuvesson scattered within the first three minutes. Saint Francis answered with three corner kicks and five shots in the next ten minutes, two of which were stopped by Bogan. Both teams registered a fair number of chances in the rest of regulation, but couldn't find the back of the net as the game went to overtime for the second time in as many games for the Mountain Hawks.

The Red Flash tallied one shot in the first overtime period, but that would be the only opportunity for either team in the first ten-minute period. Each keeper made a pair of big saves in the second overtime period, but neither could put in a game winner and the contest ended as a scoreless draw.

Final shots stood 18-15 in favor of Saint Francis, while the Red Flash also held a 7-5 corner kick advantage. Bogan made ten saves compared to Garcia's seven.

The Mountain Hawks return home Saturday to open Patriot League play against Holy Cross at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
