RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A goal from senior Jamie Luchini in the 52nd minute proved to be the game winner as the Lehigh men's soccer team captured a 1-0 win at Manhattan Wednesday evening. The Mountain Hawks improve to 2-1 with the victory, while the Jaspers fall to 0-2 on the young season.
"It was a hard-fought result for us," said head coach Dean Koski. "Manhattan played really well and made it challenging for us. We've had three games in six days and today we subbed a lot which gave us some energy and life. I thought our depth was a real advantage tonight."
The first shot of the game came from sophomore Jack Miskel in the 11th minute, but it was blocked by the Manhattan defense. The Jaspers fired off three shot within two minutes shortly after, one of which hit the crossbar and two that flew wide. Miskel fired Lehigh's second shot of the contest in the 28th minute and two minutes later sophomore Joe Bogan was forced the make the first save of the game on a header from Manhattan's Adam Weisberger. Miskel fired his third shot of the game shortly thereafter, but the contest entered halftime scoreless with the Jaspers holding a 5-3 shot advantage.
The Mountain Hawks struck shortly into the second half when Luchini sent a left-footed blast into the top near corner in the 52nd minute to put Lehigh ahead 1-0.
Bogan made his second save of the game in the 66th minute on a shot from Ajani Phillips before another shot from Phillips was blocked 40 seconds later. The Jaspers weren't able to get another shot off until they fired four in the final six minutes, but none of them found the back of the net as Lehigh walked away with a 1-0 victory.
Manhattan held a 12-7 shot advantage for the game and 4-1 corner kick edge. Bogan made two saves to earn his second career shutout, while Manhattan keeper R.J. Noll made one stop.
"Jack Miskel had a really good game for us and Justin Worley was solid as always," said Koski. "David Zipkin was good today as well. Everybody did a good job and everybody really contributed once they stepped on the field."
The Mountain Hawks return to action Monday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex when Lehigh welcomes Cornell for a 7 p.m. Labor Day contest. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
