Mountain Hawks earn dominant 4-0 win at Binghamton

8/30/2015 4:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Lehigh women's soccer team came out with a vengeance, firing a shot on goal just 23 seconds into game, converting early goals at the 1:50 and 12:02 marks on its way to a convincing 4-0 win at Binghamton on Sunday. Sophomore Alyssa Riporti opened the scoring with her first-career goal while freshman Amanda Marques scored the first of her career just over ten minutes later. Freshman Sabrina Mertz and junior Kalin Ojert added second-half tallies while the defense held the Bearcats to just three shots for the game.

"We have been coming out a little bit slowly in our previous games, so we challenged the team to be better," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "The beginning of the game was the best soccer we've played all year. We scored off two early corners and had eight or nine early shots. We had them on their heels, put them under pressure and played good soccer."

Lehigh earned its second corner kick just 1:15 into the game, leading to Riporti's first-career goal coming off a rebound opportunity. The pressure continued over the ensuing minutes and eventually led to a 2-0 advantage as freshman Clare Severe made a header off a corner kick, leading to Marques' goal at 12:02.

The Mountain Hawks continued with the shots, eventually making it 3-0 early in the second half as Mertz scored the third goal of her young career at the 49:29 mark. Lehigh controlled play for the remainder of the game and made it 4-0 in the 90th minute behind Ojert's first-career goal.

"Our back line was solid today, both defensively and creating offense," said Lambinus. "We didn't give Binghamton any looks at all. Our back line kept everyone in front of them. Ani (Nahapetian) was solid, but didn't have to do as much. Laura Courtney and Alyssa Riporti in the center back were outstanding and definitely our players of the match."

Lehigh finished with a dominant 16-3 edge in shots while the Bearcats held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Nahapetian finished with three saves across Binghamton goalkeeper Katie Hatziyianis who made seven.

"Playing on the road can be tough, but we adapted well," said Lambinus. "It shows we can play just as well away as we did at home. The game is 90 minutes and I think we have more in us. We scored four goals, but to say that we missed more chances is definitely an understatement because we hit the crossbar three times too. We were excited and came out with energy. If we can continue to play like this, we'll be dangerous moving forward."

The Mountain Hawks will continue their road swing on Thursday (Sept. 3) when they head to La Salle for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

"La Salle has shown to be one of the better ones in the region," said Lambinus. "It's a good test for us to see if we have jumped a step or not. They are tough to beat down there. We're looking forward to testing ourselves against La Salle on Thursday."
