Lehigh celebrates 2014-15 school year at annual Athletics Convocation

BETHLEHEM, Pa. –  Lehigh Athletics held its annual Convocation Program on Monday, May 4 at Baker Hall inside the Zoellner Arts Center to look back on the significant team and individual accomplishments of the past year. The event featured several videos including the department's 2014-15 highlight video plus recognition of student-athlete winners of Lehigh University awards and the announcement of winners of Lehigh's department awards.
 
Senior softball pitcher Emily Bausher earned three awards, including the department's highest honor the Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Bausher has earned All-Patriot League honors in each of her first three seasons and is a two-time NFCA All-Region selection as well as the 2014 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year. Academically, she carries a 3.59 grade point average majoring in Earth and Environmental Science and is a two-time Academic All-Patriot League selection thus far.
 
Bausher also won the Outstanding Graduating Female Athlete Award and was one of six student-athletes recognized with Distinguished Achievement Awards, These recipients are senior student-athletes who have displayed a high level of scholarship, significant athletic achievement at the league level and beyond and demonstrated service to the institution. In addition to Bausher, recipients of this award included Jade van Streepen from volleyball and four student-athletes from Lehigh's cross country and track and field programs: Lou Adesida, Natalie Bates, Ryan Mahalsky and Victoria Mullane.
 
Men's lacrosse standout Dan Taylor received the Graduating Male Athlete Award. Taylor earned All-America honors as a junior and capped his Lehigh career by earning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2015. Drafted by the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse, Taylor made his professional debut on Sunday, scoring a goal in Denver's win over Charlotte. Taylor is also one of 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the nation's top men's lacrosse player.
 
The first year male student-athlete award, the J. Daniel Nolan Award, went to Kahron Ross from men's basketball. Ross was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in men's basketball and was the only first year student-athlete named to one of the three All-Patriot League teams.
 
The John Steckbeck Award, which recognizes the top first year female student-athlete was not handed out on Monday. Lehigh's awards committee elected to postpone the announcement pending the results of postseason awards and postseason competition for spring sports. The finalists for this award are Christina Auyeung from women's tennis, Quinci Mann from women's basketball and Nicole Yozzo from softball.

The department's top senior team leadership awards went to Kelly Scott from women's lacrosse and Jimmy Miller from track and field.
 
Scott received the Mary O'Hurley Leadership Award after leading the women's lacrosse team to its first winning season since 2011 and leading her team to significant improvement over the last four years in terms of team standards, competitive record and results. She is a graduate of every phase of Lehigh Athletics' Leadership Academy.
 
Miller garnered the John A. Cable Leadership award as the top senior male in terms of team leadership. A three-year captain, Miller was a key leader for Lehigh's Patriot League Championship team in 2012. A graduate of every phase of Lehigh's Leadership Academy, Miller was consistently the hardest worker on his team and demonstrated respect and encouragement towards his teammates while holding them accountable to higher standards.
 
Women's soccer senior Ashley Blanks received the department's Sportsmanship Award for her selflessness and team-first attitude. Blanks was a four-year contributor as a goalkeeper for the women's soccer program but willingly shared playing time with an underclassman in each of the last two seasons for the betterment of the team.
 
Swimming and diving senior Madeleine Smith captured the Marlene "Linny" Fowler Service Award which goes to a graduating student-athlete who models for others a high level of integrity and team-first attitude in a servant leadership role. Smith has been a vocal team leader and a three-year student-athlete mentor who has served both Lehigh University and the Lehigh Athletics Department in a number of facets throughout her career.
 
Sophomore Spencer Taylor was named the Phillip J. Sclar Award Winner for her efforts as a student manager with the cross country and track and field programs the past two years. Taylor helps administer workouts to Lehigh runners and records practice statistics while assisting the track and field program at home meets and select road meets. He also assisted with registration for the Paul Short Run, one of the nation's largest cross country meets held every fall on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.
