Class of 2019 highlight video

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen has announced the addition of 31 student-athletes who will join the Mountain Hawks' program in the fall. The class of 2019 is larger than many of Lehigh's recent classes, but with multiple players at just about every position group and 12 states represented, the incoming group is one that meets the program's recruiting objectives.

"One of our main goals was obviously to recruit a good group of players within the class and I have no doubt that we've done that across all positions." Coen said. "What was also really important was to get more players in the program. In the last two years we've been hurt with two big classes lost to graduation. In the current model you have to work really hard to create a larger roster. I really like that we have a large group of kids who are going to make our program very competitive.

"We were hurt early in the fall last year with injuries to quite a few guys," Coen continued. "There wasn't really the competition we needed day in and day out on the practice field. I have no doubt that adding these players to our team that's something that's going to generate competition and be a real positive for our program."

Offensively, the incoming group features one quarterback, three tailbacks, one fullback, four wide receivers, two tight ends and five offensive linemen. On the defensive side of the ball, Lehigh welcomes four defensive linemen (including a defensive line/linebacker hybrid), four linebackers and five defensive backs. In addition, the incoming class includes one placekicker and one punter.

One of the main areas of focus within this class was the tailback position, where the Mountain Hawks lose leading rusher Rich Sodeke and Brandon Yosha. In their place, Lehigh has brought in Dom Bragalone from South Williamsport, Pa., Micco Brisker from Milton, Ga., and the versatile Nick Thevanayagam from Cinnaminson, N.J.

"The departure of Brandon Yosha created an area of need that we weren't expecting," Coen explained. "We've handled this need very well with the addition of three guys that can all play tailback. Nick (Thevanayagam) is very versatile. He can play tailback, quarterback, safety, slot receiver. He's an athlete that can do a lot of different things. We've also added Micco Brisker from Milton, Georgia and Dom Bragalone, who now has a lot of the records that Zach Barket used to hold in the state of Pennsylvania so we're excited about that group of guys joining the program."

The class of 2019 includes one quarterback, Brad Mayes from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Fla.

"Brad Mayes is somebody we think is going to have the opportunity to come in and compete," Coen said. "We'll have a good competition in the spring and when we add Brad to that in the summer it's really going to make the program better."

The five offensive line recruits average 6-foot-4 and 278 pounds. Included in the group is one of Mayes' high school teammates and protectors in Aidan O'Carroll.

The Hun School in New Jersey is the only other school to feed two players into the incoming class: defensive back Donavon Harris and offensive lineman Thomas Zuewsky.

On the defensive line, the Mountain Hawks bring in Harrison Kauffman from Glacier High School in Montana, Julian Lynn from Maryland, Drew Whitely from North Carolina and hybrid JuWon Morrow from New Castle, Delaware.

"Big guys are always important and we have good group on both sides of the ball," Coen said. "That's always going to be a main point of recruitment. Now it's a matter of getting the right big guys who are athletic and will help us in our offensive and defensive schemes."

Coen is also high on the back side of the defense with six defensive backs in the incoming class, and four linebackers, including local product Jake Buskirk, Brian Olshanski from New Jersey and Jake Scott, a linebacker/strong safety hybrid from the Pittsburgh area.

Geographically, New Jersey is the best-represented state with 12 student-athletes in the class. Pennsylvania is next with seven. Lehigh has added a pair of local products in Buskirk from Whitehall and wide receiver Cam Richardson from Northwestern Lehigh.

"We haven't had a player from south Jersey since we recruited Isaiah Campbell," Coen said. "We have a handful of guys this time around. Likewise we got back into western Pennsylvania with Sam McCloskey and Jake Scott. Now we have a good group of guys from those two areas that have historically been very productive for us. We're looking forward to that continuing to be a staple of the program moving forward. We did get guys from California and Montana. A good group of kids from Florida as well, so we've maintained a presence down there. We continue to have success in Georgia with Micco Brisker. It's always good to keep the Georgia guys in the pipeline. Overall, I like how everything shook out."

Lehigh's special teams will be bolstered with the addition of placekicker Ed Mish from New Jersey, and punter Joe McCollum from Illinois.

Following a disappointing 2014 season, the Mountain Hawks are eager to get back to work and will have the opportunity to do so when their spring practice segment begins on Friday March 20.
