
Lehigh Opens Track and Field Season with Fast Times Meet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's track and field team opened its 2015-16 indoor season with the annual Fast Times Before Finals meet at Rauch Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The team was paced by junior Courtney Avery, who tied her own school record with a winning leap of 1.75 meters in the high jump. The Mountain Hawks 4x800 relay team of Maura Henderson, Hanna Brosky, Amanda Ruschel and Laura Barnes ended the day with a top time of 9:48.77. The Brown and White dominated the relay with four separate Lehigh teams finishing the event in the top five.
Senior Gabrielle Wardle finished up the pentathlon in second place overall with 3,400 points, one spot ahead of junior teammate Sarah Cassidy (3,179). Each earned one individual victory in the event, with Warlde taking the high jump (1.70 m) and Cassidy finishing on top in the shot put (11.47 m).
Liyala Dickens tallied a top-five finish in the 200 meter dash, placing fifth out of 64 finishers in 26.42 seconds. Leah Ferguson (27.49) was second on the team in 18th place, Alexa Alhout (27.83) came in 27th and Katie Altpeter raced to a 45th place finish in 28.74.
Brosky and Rachel Okun added back-to-back finishes in the 500 meter dash, with Brosky earning the edge in 1:19.27 and Okun finishing in 1:19.58. Lindsay Voltz placed third on the team and 14th overall in 1:21.70.
Making her collegiate track debut, Henderson added a fourth place tally of 3:01.72 in the 1,000 meter run, good enough for two spots above teammate Ann O'Connell (3:03.48).
Lehigh's 'A' 4x400 relay team placed in the upper half of the event in seventh place, with Soraya Theard, Natalie Jacobs, Noreen Byrne and Dickens combining on a time of 4:10.03. After Lehigh's 'A' team taking the top spot in the 4x800, the all-freshman 'B' squad of Clare Severe, Ashleigh Thurston, Stacie Nadel and Stephanie Hayes placed third in 10:01.05. The 'C' team of Marissa Karl, Ashley Strysko, Jennifer Burke and Anne Birkenmaier finished in fourth place (10:14.25), and the 'D' group of Shannon Wright, Arielle Weiner, Samantha Lerner and Tyler Scanlin placed fifth overall with a time of 10:16.69.
Junior Brittany Le Jouan landed in the top three of the high jump, leaping 1.65 meters to finish in third, two places behind Avery's top spot. In Friday evening's pole vault, freshman Kaitlyn Toman used a vault of 3.05 meters to finish in sixth place.
A group of five Lehigh jumpers finished in the top 50 percent of the long jump, including Kiana Wright (10th/5.19 m), Avery (13th/5.08 m), Byrne (15th/5.08 m ), Wardle (16th/5.07 m) and Courtney Wu (17th/5.03 m).
Kiana Wright (10.68 m), Byrne (10.52 m) and Le Jouan (10.37 m) also competed and placed seventh through ninth, respectively, in the triple jump.
Amanda Youngblood led Lehigh in both the weight throw and shot put, with her longest throw of 14.65 meters landing her in fourth place, and her best shot put of 11.53 meters placing her seventh. Nia Baker used a distance of 11.45 meters to finish 10th in the shot put and finished seventh in the weight throw (13.66 m). Alexandra Layne used a 10.99 meter shot put to land in 12th overall. Michaela Bubak (13.63 m) and Paige Grossman (13.54 m) also came in eighth and ninth, respectively, in the weight throw.
"It's really exciting," O'Connell said on starting the season after training all semester. "It's a good opportunity to get a first mark before winter camp and a good chance to see where we are and where we go from here."
After a break for final exams and the holidays, Lehigh will return to action at the Villanova Open on January 8.
