BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's basketball senior Kerry Kinek and junior Lexi Martins combined to score 45 points and both recorded double-doubles as the Mountain Hawks turned in a stout defensive effort in a 74-42 drubbing of Saint Peter's Wednesday night inside Stabler Arena. Lehigh moves to 5-0 for the second-straight season and just the third time in program history, while the Peacocks fall to 1-4. Tipoff of the scheduled 5 p.m. game was pushed back 20 minutes due to traffic that delayed the Peacocks' arrival.
"I thought they came out and we're really focused to start the game," said head coach Sue Troyan. "We played one of our best halves of basketball in the first half on both the offensive and defensive ends. We rebounded the ball well and executed both offensively and defensively today."
Martins recorded her fifth double-double in as many games as she finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Kinek tallied 22 points and a game-best 11 boards. Kinek also recorded three blocks, three steals and went 3-for-4 from three-point range. Sophomore Quinci Mann followed the duo with eight points. Junior Kayla Burton dished a team-best five assists.
Lehigh finished the contest shooting 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-for-21) from three-point range and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the charity stripe. The Mountain Hawks held Saint Peter's to a 30.3 (20-for-66) field goal percentage and 7.1 percent (1-for-14) clip from downtown. The Mountain Hawks held a narrow 41-40 rebound edge.
A Kinek three-pointer opened the scoring before a Martins jumper gave Lehigh a quick 5-0 lead. Hala Mostafa drained a three to put the first Saint Peter's points on the board before another Kinek and Martins combination put five more points on the board for Lehigh to make it 10-3 with 7:25 left on the first-quarter clock. The Peacocks picked up their pace a bit to put eight more points on the board in the opening quarter before Kinek scored the last five points of the term including a last-second three-pointer to give Lehigh a 25-11 lead at the end of one.
It was all Lehigh in the second quarter as the Mountain Hawks held Saint Peter's to just two points during the period. Lehigh scored the first ten points of the quarter, a 17-0 run dating back to the first term, and held the Peacocks to 0-for-13 from the field during the streak. A Mostafa layup with 1:10 left on the first half clock stopped the Lehigh run, but four points from senior Elizabeth Jordan and a last-second layup from Burton followed to help the Mountain Hawks to a commanding 43-13 halftime lead.
Lehigh shot 48.5 percent (16-for-33) from the field in the first half and 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three-point range. The Mountain Hawks held the Peacocks to a 19.4 percent (6-for-31) clip from the field and 1-for-8 mark from downtown.
The Peacocks picked up momentum in the third quarter as Saint Peter's shot 7-for-12 to put together a 15-6 run that pulled SPU within 49-28 with 2:29 remaining in the third stanza. Five points from Martins then helped Lehigh close the quarter on a 7-2 streak to re-extend the Mountain Hawk lead to 56-30.
Lehigh picked up where it left off in the fourth quarter, scoring the first nine points of the stanza to jump ahead 70-32. The Peacocks scored ten of the final 14 points of the game, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Mountain Hawks picked up a 74-42 win.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will host the Christmas City Classic on Saturday and Sunday inside Stabler Arena. Lehigh will welcome Montana, Villanova and Drexel for the four-game tournament that will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Mountain Hawks open up tournament action against Montana at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
