Lehigh remains undefeated with dominant 83-49 win at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Four Mountain Hawks scored in double figures to lead the Lehigh women's basketball team to a convincing 83-49 victory at Delaware State Monday evening. Lehigh remains undefeated with the win and moves to 4-0 for the second-straight season and just the third time in program history, while the Hornets fall to 0-4 on the season.

"I thought it was a great team effort and a lot of different people contributed," said head coach Sue Troyan. "We had a good offensive effort from a number of players and Kerry Kinek and Lexi Martins continue to be really consistent. A lot of different kids contributed and that's particularly important when we play four games in a six-day span."

Ten Mountain Hawks saw double digit minutes in the full team effort. Junior Lexi Martins led the team with her fourth double-double in as many games with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while senior Kerry Kinek also chipped in 18 points. Senior Amina Affini followed with 15 points, while classmate Elizabeth Sharlow chipped in 12. Junior Kayla Burton and sophomore Quinci Mann dished three assists apiece.

The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the field and 33.3 percent (6-for-18) from three-point range. Lehigh converted 21 of its 28 attempts (75.0 percent) from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks held Delaware State to a 32.3 (21-for-65) shooting percentage and 17.9 (5-for-28) mark from downtown. The Mountain Hawks held a commanding 53-29 rebound advantage.

Baskets from Martins and Kinek put the game's first points on the board as Lehigh kept the Hornets scoreless until the 7:12 mark. Mann hit back-to-back threes to put Lehigh ahead 10-2 as the first-quarter clock wound down to 5:00.  The Mountain Hawks moved ahead by 11 at 15-4 following a trey from Affini and a Sharlow layup. A last-second half-court attempt from N'Kayah Kersey pulled DSU within ten at 20-10 as the first quarter came to a close.

The Mountain Hawks scored the first six points of the second frame and eventually extended their period opening run to 13-3 following a jumper from sophomore Taylor Campbell that put Lehigh ahead 33-13 with 4:43 to play in the opening half. The Mountain Hawks continued their strong defense down the stretch and Lehigh scored 11 of its 21 second-quarter points at the charity stripe to carry a dominant 41-18 lead into halftime.

Lehigh finished the first half shooting 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from the field and held Delaware State to a mark of 23.3 percent (7-for-30).

A Mikah Aldridge layup put the first points of the second half on the board for the Hornets, but a three-pointer from freshman Hailey Pascoe sparked a 10-0 Mountain Hawk run that wound the third-quarter clock down to 6:43 and put Lehigh ahead 51-20. Lehigh took its largest lead yet at 57-27 following a Sharlow layup off a pretty feed from Burton. The DSU offense heated up down the stretch in the third frame, but Lehigh had an answer for every basket before a last-second bank shot from Kinek ended the quarter and put Lehigh ahead 67-34.

The Hornets scored ten of the fourth quarter's first 16 points, but a layup from sophomore Bernadette Devaney was followed by four points from Affini to put the score at 79-44 in favor of the Mountain Hawks. The lead remained dominant for the final five minutes of the game as Lehigh captured an 83-49 victory.

Lehigh returns home to welcome Saint Peter's at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening before hosting the Christmas City Classic Saturday and Sunday inside Stabler Arena.
