BALTIMORE – The Lehigh volleyball team closed the third set on a 21-7 run to secure a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) victory at Loyola Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks complete the season sweep of the Greyhounds and move to 7-4 in league play and 15-11 overall. Loyola falls to 1-9 in the Patriot League and 6-20 overall with the loss.
"I was happy with the way the team played today and glad that some of our younger players got to get some good experience," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "Loyola came out with nothing to lose and guns blazing in the third set and we lost our composure a bit. We were able to settle down and get back in it which was great to see."
A balanced offensive attack was led by senior Ana Vrhel with nine kills, while seniors Leah Turner and Stephanie Slater followed with eight apiece. Sophomore Whitney Krantz and freshman Megan Polak both chipped in six kills, while Polak tallied a .500 hitting percentage and led the team with 19 assists. Freshman Emily Develle registered a squad-high 12 digs. The Mountain Hawks hit .243 as a team while limiting Loyola to a stingy mark of .043.
The Mountain Hawks scored the first four points of the opening set and eventually extended their lead to six at 11-5. Loyola rallied to pull within one at 14-13 following an 8-3 streak and the Greyhounds continued to hang around at 19-17. A kill from Turner then ignited the Mountain Hawks who rattled off the final six points of the set to secure a 25-17 victory and grab a 1-0 match advantage.
Lehigh once again scored the first four points of the second half and remained up by four at 8-4 a few points later. A kill from Polak sparked an 8-0 Lehigh run that also saw three spikes from Krantz to give the Mountain Hawks a commanding 16-4 lead. The Greyhounds wouldn't get closer than eight the rest of the way as a Loyola attack error eventually secured a 25-14 set-two win for the Mountain Hawks.
Several Mountain Hawk errors helped the Greyhounds rattle off six straight points early on in the third set as Loyola jumped ahead 10-2. Trailing 13-4 a few points later, the Mountain Hawks put the next five points on the board to narrow the Loyola advantage to 13-9 and force the Greyhounds to call a timeout. A kill from Turner and a Develle service ace followed to extend Lehigh's streak to 7-0 before a Loyola block finally stopped the run. The Mountain Hawks were able to chip away at the Greyhounds' lead before a Turner spike sparked a 6-0 match-ending run that cemented a 25-20 victory and 3-0 match win.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when Lehigh heads to Colgate Friday night before returning home Saturday to host Bucknell at 4 p.m.
