Lehigh Captures Third Straight Win at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Behind junior Kaitlyn Ruffing setting a new pool record in the 50 yard freestyle sprint, the Lehigh women's swimming and diving program picked up its third win in a row on Saturday afternoon with a 190-98 win at Rider. The Mountain Hawks now sit at 3-1 on the young season.

Ruffing won the title in the 50 yard freestyle sprint winning in 23.82 seconds, which is a new pool record at Rider. She later tacked on a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.82.

Senior Courtney Patterson picked up a win of her own in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:46.51). Sophomore Abby Thomson captured a win in the 500 freestyle (5:19.00) and tallied a second place time of 11:05.38 in the 1,000 yard freestyle.

Junior Kelly Carroll captured two first place wins of her own on the day, pacing the field in the 200 freestyle (1:56.80) and the 200 IM (2:11.39).

Freshman Courtney Ferreira continued her strong start to the season with two wins in the 100 free (53.88) and 100 butterfly (1:01.17). Fellow classmate Kate Bergin took home first place in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.57, and added a second place finish of 1:00.52 in the 100 backstroke.

Sophomore Rachel Rider placed third in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 2:18.41, going along with her third place tally of 1:01.30 in the 100 backstroke. Continuing her backstroke success, her best finish of the day came in the 200 backstroke, where she placed second in 2:10.66.

Sophomore Sydney Bornstein (200 fly/2:08.39) and senior Melissa Feeney (200 breast/2:33.52) also captured wins at the meet for the Mountain Hawks.

Senior Courtney Koch placed second in the 50 yard freestyle in 25.03 and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke in (1:02.67).

Junior Cora Summerfield (200 fly/2:14.17) and sophomore Julia Perry (100 free/56.23) each registered second place finishes on the afternoon, and junior Valerie Lauer added a third place finish to complete a clean-top three sweep for Lehigh in the 1,000 yard freestyle.

The Mountain Hawks freestyle relay teams took the top two spots in the 400 yard relay, with the 'A' team of Ruffing, Carroll, Ferreira and Koch winning the event. The 'B' squad of Patterson, Perry, Thomson and Summerfield took second place.

Elsewhere in the relays, the 200 yard medley relay team of Rider, Feeney, Carroll and Ruffing began the day with a victory in a time of 1:51.13.

Lehigh will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m., when they will welcome Colgate to Jacobs Pool for a Patriot League matchup.
