WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-20) victory at Holy Cross Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks bounce back from a tough loss Friday at Army West Point to improve to 13-10 overall and 5-3 in league play, while the Crusaders fall to 5-16 overall and 2-6 in the Patriot League.
Senior Stephanie Slater paced the Lehigh offense with 14 kills and a .387 hitting percentage, while classmate Ana Vrhel followed with nine kills and a clip of .350. Senior Amy Matula dished 25 assists to go along with nine digs, while freshman Emily Develle registered a team-best 22 digs. Lehigh hit .271 as a team and limited the Crusaders to a clip of .126.
The opening set began in a 4-4 tie until a kill from Slater sparked a 6-3 Lehigh run that gave the Mountain Hawks a 10-7 advantage. The Crusaders were still within three at 16-13, but back-to-back kills from Vrhel, a Turner spike and block from the two Mountain Hawks stretched Lehigh's lead to 20-13. Holy Cross answered with the next three points, but the deficit proved to be too much as a kill from Matula eventually gave the Mountain Hawks a 25-17 set-one win and 1-0 match advantage.
The Crusaders were able to break open a 9-9 tie with a 7-3 run to take a 16-12 lead in the second set. Lehigh quickly chipped away at the Holy Cross lead to knot the score at 17 with the help of two kills from senior Leah Turner, one from Vrhel and one from Matula. The Crusaders then went ahead by two, but followed with three straight attack errors to put Lehigh in front 20-19 and force a Holy Cross timeout. The Crusaders knotted the score at 20, but Lehigh scored the next point and remained in the lead until a Slater spike capped off a 25-23 set-two win.
Holy Cross opened the third set with a 7-4 lead and stayed in front all the way to a 16-13 advantage. Back-to-back Vrhel kills were followed by three from sophomore Whitney Krantz as Lehigh was able to use a 5-2 run to take an 18-16 lead. The Mountain Hawks stayed ahead by at least two points the rest of the way and a kill from freshman Hannah Wagner eventually secured a 25-20 set-three win to complete the sweep.
The Mountain Hawks return to action Wednesday when Lehigh travels to archrival Lafayette for a 7 p.m. showdown. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
