BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In the midst of a successful season, the Lehigh rowing team heads to Philadelphia to compete in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Friday and Saturday. Action on the Schuylkill River begins at 7 a.m. The Women's Varsity Four gets the Mountain Hawks going at 8:36 a.m. See below for Lehigh's complete schedule.
Â
Saturday's finals are scheduled to air online through ESPN3 beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
"Dad Vails is the largest college race in the world pulling in over a hundred different teams each year to compete," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "This is the most important race for the men's squad and the one that they really build towards all year. For the women, it is a very big race and will give us a great understanding of what we'll face at the Patriot League championships (May 16). The team is excited about the potential that we have this year and want to show what we've been showing all spring, our speed."
Â
Last time out, the Mountain Hawks won seven of eight races against Colgate and Hamilton University. Both Men's and Women's Varsity Eights won to set the tone for a strong day.
Â
The Women's Freshmen Eight led a strong Lehigh effort at last year's Dad Vail Regatta, finishing with a bronze medal. Six Mountain Hawk crews competed in Saturday's semifinals as Lehigh was the only school with both the Women's Freshmen Four and Freshmen Eight in the grand finals.
Â
The team has been staying sharp during final exams period, which ended on Thursday.
Â
"Taking exams during a big regatta is an incredibly difficult thing to do, but is the life of a student-athlete," said Conley. "The challenge that we have is the competitiveness of our athletes, in and out of the classroom, as many struggle to get proper sleep. I think we've had fewer athletes pulling all-night study sessions this year and many have said that they feel more focused when they take exams and more capable of practice. We've been trying to preach early preparation all spring, so we're hoping that helps."
Â
In a season full of reaching new heights, the Mountain Hawks have high hopes for the weekend ahead.
Â
"The goal is to have our boats in the grand finals," said Conley. "We have walked away from this regatta with medals in the past and we hope this year is no different. Getting to the grand final is the most difficult thing and then it's anybody's race once you're there."
