BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's basketball team reflected back on the 2013-14 season at its annual "Zell" Awards Banquet on Sunday Apr. 13. The dinner included three awards presented to standout team members as well as remarks from seniors Mackey McKnight and Anthony D'Orazio, and a season highlight video.
"Our banquet is always a special time to recognize the significant accomplishments of the season and to also honor individuals," said Reed. "It provides a very nice way to close our year in style. It's also a way to say goodbye in a meaningful way to our senior class."
The Mountain Hawks enjoyed their share of highlights in 2013-14, including a win at eventual SWAC Champion and NCAA Tournament team Texas Southern, a victory at preseason favorite Boston University, a five-game winning streak capped off by beating eventual 20-win team Quinnipiac and a four-game winning streak during Patriot League play.
This year's Athlete of the Year Award was presented to McKnight for his outstanding accomplishments and contributions throughout the season. McKnight enjoyed a career year to earn All-Patriot League honors for a second straight season. The New Orleans native started all 32 games in 2013-14, averaging 13.5 points and four rebounds while dishing a career-high and Lehigh single-season record 192 assists. McKnight finished his career with a Lehigh record 578 assists. McKnight was clutch down the stretch of games, scoring game-winning baskets with time winding down in overtime at Navy and at Boston University. He started on the 2011-12 team that won a Patriot League Championship and defeated Duke in the NCAA Tournament.
Junior Stefan Cvrkalj earned the Scholar-Athlete Award given to the team member who exemplifies strong worth ethic, both in basketball and his studies. As an Accounting major, he owns a cumulative GPA of 3.81. Cvrkalj has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every year. He has also excelled on the court, playing in 23 games last season and averaging 4.5 points per game. Cvrkalj scored 14 second-half points at both Navy and vs. Bucknell to lead the Mountain Hawks to key Patriot League wins.
Junior Corey Schaefer was honored with the Coach's Award, which recognizes the player with an outstanding work ethic, attitude and leadership characteristics both on and off the court. Schaefer made strong contributions in all 32 games this season, averaging 8.3 points per contest. He reached double-figure points on 14 occasions, led by a career-high 16 points against Texas Southern and at Colgate.
The Sixth Man award was presented to the Lehigh Men's Basketball Partnership, led by Fred Ketcho '83.
