Watch: Highlights of the Lehigh Football Class of 2018

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen announced the Mountain Hawks' 2014 recruiting class on National Signing Day Wednesday. Eighteen student-athletes will join the Lehigh football program in the fall as the Class of 2018 while the Mountain Hawks have also added a transfer to the mix. The incoming class is comprised of student-athletes from eight states with every offensive and defensive position group addressed.

The incoming group features ten offensive players and seven players on the defensive side of the ball, plus two newcomers categorized as athletes, who could fit in as offensive skill performers or in the defensive secondary. The recruiting goals of the coaching staff included fortifying the defensive line and secondary on defense and adding depth to the skill positions on offense.

"We needed to get more of a presence on the line of scrimmage defensively and I think we did that," said Coen, who enters his ninth season. "We have good skill in the program but its young skill and they haven't proven themselves yet. We lose two receivers this year and three more after next year so we need to be sure that we're ready to go with the kids we've brought in this year."

On the defensive line Coen brought in three capable recruits in Tyler Cavenas from Mahanoy City, Pa., Justin Gille from Manalapan, N.J., and Harrison Johnson from Winter Haven, Fla. who will help address one of the coaching staff's top priorities.

"I feel like we accomplished our top goals," Coen said. "Number one was the defensive front and we did that with three big guys. Tyler Cavenas is very athletic but a little raw. Justin Gille is another big guy but he's very athletic for his size. He can play inside our outside and has been productive. Harrison Johnson reminds me a lot of T.J. Stubbs, who did a nice job in our program last year. He's going to develop into a very big guy. He's already very physical and shown to be a great pass rusher who can play inside or outside. I'm excited about that group.

"Quinton Jones from the Atlanta area is an outstanding cover guy with great footwork who will play cornerback for us," Coen continued. Safety Steven Brown from West Caldwell, N.J. has very good range. Largely it was the front group and the back end that we were focused on defensively, and we filled those needs with five guys who are important to us in this class."

Offensively Lehigh will lose two wide receivers including All-American Lee Kurfis, plus 1,000 yard rusher Keith Sherman to graduation and with three more wideouts entering their senior seasons, the Mountain Hawks felt the need to reload at the skill positions, specifically wide receiver where Lehigh has added Gatlin Casey from Navarre, Fla., Sasha Kelsey from Miami, and Troy Pelletier, a New Hampshire native who attended Bridgton Academy in Maine; plus athletes Joe Siegenthaler from Ohio and Nico Munley from Moosic, Pa.

"We brought in a big group of skill players, wide receivers and athlete-type guys," Coen said. We graduate a couple wide receivers and after next year we will graduate three more so it was important to bring in a big group. The three wide receivers can all play inside or outside. Joe Siegenthaler may be the most versatile guy in our class. He has played tailback, the slot, outside receiver, safety, cornerback and returned kicks. He will probably start working with the wide receivers and can do a lot of good things for us with his athleticism."

Coen added, "Nico Munley was a very good athlete for Riverside High School. It's always nice to add a nice group of Pennsylvania guys to the program."

The four-player contingent from Pennsylvania includes Munley and tight end Michael Baur from the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area, Cavenas from Mahanoy City and the lone quarterback in the class, Matthew Timochenko from Wilson West Lawn High School in Berks County.

"He is a very good quarterback," Coen said of Timochenko. "We really liked his junior tape so he was on our radar since last spring. He's a good athlete. He runs well with the football. We had him in our camp which is really important because we got to see him throw. I like recruiting local guys at quarterback because they have an opportunity to come out and watch practice and be with our guys in the summer. It's important to have those guys around."

The transfer student-athlete in the incoming class is running back Brandon Yosha from Indianapolis, Indiana who comes to Lehigh from the University of Miami. A former standout running back at Cathedral High School, Yosha appeared in six games on special teams for the Hurricanes as a true freshman in 2012 where he recorded one tackle. He will have three years of eligibility for the Mountain Hawks.

While the incoming class features a total of seven student-athletes from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the Mountain Hawks continued to enjoy recruiting success in the football-rich state of Florida, where five members of the incoming class hail from, the most among all states. The Florida contingent includes wide receivers Casey and Kelsey, tight end Drew Paulsen (Tampa), offensive lineman Kadeem Smith (Lauderdale Lakes) and Johnson (Winter Haven). In addition to Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey the incoming group features two student-athletes from both Michigan and Georgia and one each from New Hampshire, Indiana and Ohio.

"We always recruit Florida like its Pennsylvania or New Jersey," Coen said. "That's always been our philosophy since I've been back as head coach. We've always been able to yield guys from there. It's good to get a couple of Georgia guys as it has been a while since we've landed more than one in a class. We also ended up having success in some of our non-traditional regions like the Florida panhandle and the upper Midwest with the two recruits from Michigan and one from Indiana."

An 8-3 campaign in 2013 gives Lehigh an impressive 39-9 overall record over the last four seasons. The Mountain Hawks won Patriot League Championships in 2010 and 2011 and were the only NCAA FCS Program to win at least ten games in each of the three seasons from 2010-2012.

"Overall I think it's a very good class," Coen said. "You always try to go in with an idea of what you want to accomplish and I think we've met those goals."

Following a disappointing end to the 2013 season, the Mountain Hawks are eager to get back to work and will have the opportunity to do so when their spring practice segment begins on Friday March 21.
