Wrestle-Offs kick off 2004-05 season

The night’s first bout was a tight one at 125 pounds. Down 9-8 entering the third period John Stout utilized a takedown and two fall points to defeat Andrew Rizzi 12-9. In a second 125 pound bout freshman Patrick Berger defeated sophomore Gerrit Swaneveld 6-3.
There was a spirited battle at 133 where Jeff Santo defeated Matt Ciasulli 9-2 in a match that was tight until the very end, when Santo twice got three fall points to earn the upset victory.

The next two bouts would be rematches of last year’s Wrestle-Offs. The unique pairing of 6-3 sophomore Matt Anderson and 5-3 sophomore David Nakasone did battle at 149 with At 174 it was junior Travis Frick besting sophomore Bryan Bernal 20-8 in the night’s highest scoring bout.
Three of the final four matches were close and low-scoring. Matt Cassidy defeated David Helfrich and Jon Bruno held off Kevin McFarland by identical 3-2 scores in a pair of 184 pound bouts.
After an Olympic deferral year, Jon Trenge returned to the mat for Lehigh and scored a pin over Dave Brundage. In the night’s finale sophomore Paul Weibel got a late point to edge junior Tom Curl 3-2 in the heavyweight division.
“I was pleased with the competitive spirit,” said coach Greg Strobel. “I thought everyone fought hard. It was a great event for this crowd, good action and one or two upsets.”
The Mountain Hawks open the regular season on Friday November 12 when they welcome
