BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s golf team will be heading to Florida to open its spring season as the Mountain Hawks will host the three-team Lehigh Invitational Monday at The Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach. The Mountain Hawks will be joined by Richmond and Yale for the one-day, 18-hole tournament on the club’s 6,044-yard, par-72 course.
The event will be the first of five spring competitions for Lehigh, culminating in the inaugural Patriot League women’s golf championship, April 20-21 in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Mountain Hawks finished in the top half of the field in two of their fall tournaments, taking sixth out of 15 teams at the Bucknell Invitational and ninth out of 21 at Rutgers.
Junior Crystal Lee was Lehigh’s top performer at the Bucknell Invitational and also at Lehigh Invitational at Saucon Valley CC in October. Lee’s 232 in Lewisburg was the low 54-hole score for Lehigh in the fall season. Sophomore Kelly Moylan posted the top score in a 36-hole event, shooting 155 (77-78) to tie for 16th at Rutgers.
Senior Ginette Schapira had the low round of the fall for Lehigh, a final-round 75 at Bucknell. Schapira tied with classmate Chelsea Michalek as the top finisher at the Yale Invitational, while at Rutgers Schapira tied with freshmen Nicole Feierberg and Tess Jennings as top performers among Lehigh’s five scoring players.
The tournament format for the Lehigh Invitational will be 18 holes of stroke play. Five ladies will participate per team with the top four scores counting for the team score. In addition Lehigh will have five student-athletes competing as individuals, allowing the entire Mountain Hawk squad an opportunity to play, while Yale and Richmond will enter three and one individuals respectively.
The Lehigh Invitational will tee off Monday morning from the Lost Tree Club. The Mountain Hawks’ next tournament will be the C&F Bank Invitational, March 17-19 in Williamsburg, Va.
