BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s tennis team enters the 2013 with high expectations following a runner-up finish in 2011 and a second place regular season finish a year ago. The Mountain Hawks were picked third in the Patriot League preseason poll, unveiled Thursday. Lehigh garnered 50 points in the poll, which is voted on by coaches and sports information directors.
The Mountain Hawks trailed only the service academies, Navy and Army, who are both annual contenders for the league crown. The defending champion Mids garnered 70 points and 10 of a possible 14 first place votes in the poll. Army received the other four votes and tallied 63 points overall.
Lehigh posted a 13-8 record in 2012 including a 4-1 Patriot League mark that was highlighted by Lehigh’s first win over Army in the Patriot League era, 5-2 on April 15. The Mountain Hawks lost their rematch with the Black Knights 4-0 in the Patriot League semifinals two weeks later.
The Mountain Hawks lost just one senior to graduation as the core of their team returns in 2013. Senior co-captains Andrew Krentz and Matt Savran will solidify the bottom of Lehigh’s singles lineup , while junior Mark Goldberg and sophomores Ben Gilman and Mitchell Petersen will man the top spots.
Bucknell followed Navy, Army and Lehigh coming in fourth in the preseason poll, while Colgate, Lafayette and Holy Cross round out the balloting.
The Mountain Hawks will open the 2013 season on Saturday January 26 when they host the Drexel Dragons at 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
